Ingle Adopt Hat form of Principles, The socialists of the nrst congres sional district of Oregon met Friday, April 3. at Salem ,and decided upon a candidate to enter the race. John W. ingle ,of Carvallls, was nominat ed with little opposition. The follow ing platform was adopted: "We affirm our unfaltering adher ence to principle, nnd the program of International socialism by the ballot. "In presenting our candidate for congress to the working class voters of tho First Congressional district we baso our appeal upon the following declarations as our platform of prin ciples: "1. Labor produces wealth, "2. Under the present economic and political conditions, labor's share In the wealth which It creates Is merely a mean and uncertain subsist ence. "3 So long as tho present organiz ation of Industry remains the capital ist class will monopolize the machin ery of production nnd will appropriate through tho wage system tho wealth created by the working class. "4 This appropriation of labor's wealth by the capitalist Is so com plete that It enables them to llvo In luxury nnd Idleness. "5 As a necessnry ronsequenco of this exploitation of tho laborers by tho capitalists this expropriation of all property out of the hands of the tollers into private ownership of tho holders of capital, there is an Inevita ble war between tho Interests of the working class on the one hnnd and the Interests of tho capitalist class on the other. "0 This class struggle between the wealth-makers and tho wealth takers will eniluro so long as our pres ent system of production for profit continues. . "7. In this conflict between the workers and the capitalists, labor Is disarmed on tho economic sldo, all tho Instruments of producing nnd dis tributing wealth being owned and con trolled by the holders of capital. "8. There is only ono weapon with which the working class can hucccss lully oppose the capitalistic system and that Is the ballot. "3. This fact demands as an Inev itable conclusion tho organization of the working class Into a political par ty that shall be. everywhere and al ways, distinct from and opposed to every political party not founded en tirely upon the Interests of the work ing class. The socialist party Is or ganized to meet the demand, nnd is, therefoie, the party of the working class. "10. The socialist party, when In office, shall always and everywhere, until the present system of wage slavery is utterly abolished, make the answer to this question Its guiding lule of conduct: Will this legislation advance the Interests of the working class and aid tho workers In their struggle against capitalism? If It does the socialist party is for It; If it does not, the socialist party is obso lately opposed to It. "11 That wo emphatically and for ever oppose and condemn the Idea of fusion with either of the old par lies, or any other patty, and believe in standing out Independently and fighting our battles on the lino of so cialism. "1". In conclusion, we appeal to all worklugmen to study thu princi ples of socialism, to vote with their class at all elections until they over throw the power of cnpitalism, abolish Industrial classes in society, termin ate forever the class struggle and In augurate the co-operative common wealth based upon this fundamental principle of Justice. To every work er the lull product of his labor." John W. Ingle, sociulist candidate for congress In the first district, was a delegate to the last national con vention as a populist, He was born In Illinois, December 10, 1819, and came to Oregon In 1SC2, He lived in Eastern Oiegon 10 years. Mo receiv ed hi seducatlou at I'hllomath Col lege, In Benton county, after which he taught school fceveial yeais. He served In the legislature two years from Umatilla county, being elected as tho democratic candidate. He then conducted a warehouse In Day ton, Oregon for four years, and a gen eral merchandise store In I'hllomath, Or., for tho same period. He now owns a good farm two and u half miles from CorvalllH, GREAT STRIKE PROBABLE. New England Textile Workers Theat en to Go Out En Masse, Boston, Mass,. April 7. Unless a settlement Is speedily reached the picsent week will seo the Inaugura tion of the greatest textile strike over attempted In Now England, It will Involve thousands of operatives In the mills of Lowell, New Heill'onl, Taunton mid other centers of the tex tile Industry where the 10 per cent In crease in wages was not granted last year. Tim local unions in this city have already voted to strike, but the final decision rests with tho National' Mule Spinners' Association, which began a meeting hero today. The United Tex tile Workers, supported by the spin ners, which is the wealthiest labor union In America, feels that It Is In a position to wage a fight to a finish with the mill owners. Die strike once started would In all probability spread throughout New England and develop Into ono of the fiercest labor contests that has ever taken place In this section.
