Why buy poor coal when you can Ret the best for the same price? Laatz Bros. Telephone Main 51 Onions Plentiful and Cheap Coarse Salt Goes Up a Notch Flour De cllnes 25 Cents a Barrel Large Shipments of Nebraska Corn Have Reached Price of Barley. TIip local markets present several hiterestliiK changes comnnrctl with a week ago. The most notable being; the advances noted In the price of beef anil pork for shipment. AH these quotations are for the animal on the hoof. Cows are worth ?3.7G, steers, $4.3J and live hoes SG.Sj. These are the hsiires offered by the buyers this morning for the Sound market. An oddity in the conditions govern' lug the produce market Is the super. abundance at this time of onions. The decline has not been particularly marked In the price' offered to the farmers by the local green grocers, being only from $1 to 75 cents per sack. Hut any fuithcr decline would put them entirely put of the matket. It Is said by a local green grocer that a local commission house lately hauled half a carload of onions bought for shipment out on the hills, scattered them and left them to lot, Of course a bad and continuous slump in the general markets was responsi hie, and the above quotation of 7fi cents per sack is purely the local price. The only explanation given for tho advance in tho price of coarse salt per hundred Is "the trust did it." Yesterday morning Hour went down !li cents per barrel In the locnl mar ket. The retailers could give no lea son. Not over 100 dry beef hides liavn come in during the past week, and naturally tho price has ndvanced somewhat. A perfectly dry, prime, Al beef hide Is worth 12 v cents per pound. About 2.'0 sheep pelts have hecu brought In during the past week. There Is now n nuotntlon 5 cents per pound for green sheep polls. Up till within the past week all tho sli-op pelts brought In have been dry. There will bo from now an abund ance of fresh salmon, ..aliliut, smelt and catfish In the inniket. Grain Quotations. All grain quotntlous now are strict ly nominal, No. 1 club wheat is quoted at GO cents; hluestem, 70, Harioy is off. For some time it was worth 1 cent per pound, Now it is quoted nt from 80 to DO cents. Tho decline Is due largely. It Is said, to tlie fanners holding for a cent and a quarter per pound during the season when stock feed was so badly needed. In tho meantime, the Influx of ICansus and Nebraska corn took place and in such immense quantities for feeding that the local market for bailey went to a bad slump. The Wheat Trade. Portland, April 2. Thero nro no Blgns of any revival In the wheat market; business Is very quiet and ery few lots nro offered lor sale. Stocks held In the Interior unsold will hardly reach 2Vi million bushels. Kx porters and millers nro nil welt sup plied with wheat and are not anxious to buy nt present nsklng prices. Holders no doubt have come to real ize that they held on too long and see now a decline of 6 cents per bushel from the lop of the mnrkct. There Is nothing doing whalover for export nnd no lueentlvo for tho ship pers to lay In a supply of wheat, tho fow vessels chartered the balance of tho season nro amply looked after and no detention for want of wheat will be noted. Farmers nt present are nil busy seeding nnd looking after spring work and In a great ninny sections have finished. Tho fall-sown grain Is full CO per cent short or last year nnd unless the same is put Into spring work we will have n very short crop, Wo quoto club, 72Jf"3o per bushel, blue stein, 82c, valley 78c and no mar ket nt these figures. Mnny In tho trade quote 3 cents lower than tho above. HOTELS. San Krnncslco, April 2. Shipping grades of wheat remain about stonily In pilco, hut nctunl trading Is of hut small volume. Tho llrmuesa of hold ers In their belief that prices will be higher, piovcuts concessions, and In consequence cuvtnlls business. The exporters, on the other hand, assert that present conditions In tho Eng lish market do not admit of them pay ing these nsklng prices. 1'or the same reason the Australian demand Is limited. There ale only four ships In poit under engagement to load grain, nnd loading progresses slowly. The high price of milling wheal Is causing millers to bring wheat fiom Oregon nnd Washington. Within a few weeks large lots linve come to hand nnd the bulk of which Is going to Interior points lor nulling purposes. i lie speculative market wns devoid of special Interest nnd prices for No, 1 shipping nro $1.37Hl.l"M:, milling. 1 . 1716 ET1 .R5 per cental.
