"Young Corbett," featherweight cham
pion of the world, and Terry McGov
ern, who has hopes of recovering: the
title he lost In the memorable fight
at Hnrtford n year ago last Novem
ber, will meet tonight In the arena
of tho Hayes Valley Athletic Club to
settle the question of supremacy. Tiie
men are matched to box 20 rounds.
If present arrangements nre carried
out the boxers will face one another
about 9 p. m. According to reports
from their respective training nuar
tors. McGovern and "Young Corbett"
nre both In first-class physical condi
tion. Both completed their regular
training yesterday and nre doing just
enough work today to keep their
weight at the right figure until called
upon to enter tho ring. The articles
of agreement stipulate that they are
to weigh in at 127 pounds nt i o'clock
this afternoon. Neither anticipates
any difficulty in tipping the scales nt
the right figure.
The fact thnt tho betting is in fnvor
ot McGovern does not prove conclus
ively, however, that there are not
ring critics and quite a number of
them, who are of the opinion that
when the two little fighters face in
the squared circle tonight "Young
Corbett" will repent tho dose he ad

the Hartford meeting.
These persons base their belief on
the Idea that the Denverlte is the
one fighter who is thoroughly ac
quainted with McGovern's style of
fighting and capable of getting In the
knock-out blow at the first opportuni
ty. They nrgiie further that a fighter
prce defeated is always nt a disadvan
tage when he faces his conqueror n
second time. The champion, full of
the knowledge that he had defeated
bis opponent before, gains courage In
the belief that he can do the trick
a second time, while the vanquished
Is more than apt to lose confidence m
himself when he faces the man who
has once defeated him.
To compare the tactics of the two
fighters Is an easv mattor. It mav
! be said thnt their style of fighting is
n slight advantage over his opponent
when It comes to the scientific points
of tho game, but on the other hand
the champion Is considered less like
ly to lose his head when things get
lively. Ab to hard hitting and game
ness the two little fighters are about
as evenly matched as ever were two
antagonists in tho ring. In which
ever corner of the ring the bird of
victory alights the fight is certain to
lie a lively contest from gong to
gong. The general opinion in sporting
circles is that the battle will not go

Laid to Rest in La Grand, After Busy
Life of 97 Years.

al of Genoral J. H. Stevens was held
In this city today, under the auBpices
of tho Masonic fraternity, of which
he had been a member for 50 years.
General Stevens was born in Ja
maica, Windham county, Vermont,
March 26, 1806. After an academic
education, he became a school teach

In the civil war ho was a brigadier
general of tho Michigan state troops.
Ho crossed the plains to Oregon In
1852, and two years lator went back
via the Isthmus of Panama. Return
ing with his family to Oregon, he noted for their great

The vein is traceable the entire length of the claims,
thirty-fivo hundred (3500) foot, and tho ore shoots arc
known to bo of immense length, and the values in the
samo ovonly distributed throughout.
Tho width of tho vein varies from ten (10) to forty
(40) feot, and has a northeasterly and southwesterly
strike of course; tho permanency of which has been dem
onstrated by tho dovolopment of the other mines on the
now famous MOTHER LODE of the Sumptor District.
Tho vein on this property has been explored thor
oughly on tho surface by means of shafts, tunnels m
opon cuts, and is known to carry commercial values the
