Colonel H. E. Dosch, Special Commis
sioner, Writes Entertaining Account
of Ceremonies.
The opening of the Osaka exposi
tion Is the subject of a letter from
Colonel H. E. Dosch, special commis
sioner from the Lewis and Clark ex
position, says the Morning Oregonl
an. Colonel Dosch writes under date
of March 2 In n highly entertaining
manner. The opening was on March
1. He describes it as follows:
"Agreeable with the original plan,
tho Fifth National Industrial Imposi
tion was opened ln this city yester
day (Sunday) under the most favora
ble conditions. Early In the morning
tho city was enveloped In a dense fog,
which, however, drifted seaward be
fore tho vast crowds took up their
march exposltlonward, and the sun
shed his grateful rays over nil.
Crowded With People.
"Long before the time set for tho
ceremonies all the streets and aven
ues leading to tho exposition were
crowded with people, and It was with
great dlflleulty that our kuru-ma-ya
could push their way through.
"All the officials, commissioners,
city, county and state dignitaries
gradually assembled ln tho large cor
emonlal hall, and promptly at 10
o'clock Viince Knnin stopped upon
tho platfoim and delivered what Is
said to bo an excellent address, which
was listened to In profound silence,
the audience standing. At the close,
the prince simply bowed, nnd Instead
of deafening applause such as would
have followed our American orator,
all present bowed low down nnd re
mained in that attitude until the
prince had retired, which Is the high
est compliment that can be paid to
any one. We were then handed souv
enir boxes containing choice Japan
ese candles, handkerchiefs and plans
of the exposition and invited to in
spect the many buildings, which was
douo in a body, I soon drifted away,
as I was more interested In the vast
crowd outside, and worked my way to
the grand entrance gate. This gate
laces over a large square of possibly
10 acres, from which radiate the
stieets toward the city. This was con
gested with an immense mass of peo
ple for a mile or more: standing as
I did upon a little elevation, I beheld
a sea of expectant faces with their
ears primed to the midday gun, the
signal for the turnstiles to commence
their unceasing click. The moment
the gun was fired I could behold a
wave of delight pass over the coun
tenances of these hundreds of thous
ands of visitors. The sight was awe
Inspiring. Everyone Orderly.
"I expected a grand rush, and fear
ed tho frail gates and fences would be
crushed in, as there were only a few
policemen on duty; but I was agreea
bly disappointed. Everybody wbb or
derly; no crowding, no pushing, no
Jostling and hollering to get in first;
nothing of the kind; everyone passed
through quietly, smiling and bowing
as they handed their admission tick
ets to the gatekeepers to punch out
for them to drop Into a box as they
passed out later In the day. I stood
for three hours watching and admir
ing the gentle patience of these peo
ple, and stl'l they were coming.
"When the tickets were counted
It was found that over 310,000 persons
had paid tho small admission fee of
five sen (2 cents). This may seem
a sman sum to us, out wnen you
consider that the mapority of Japan
ese earn only 1C to 20 sen (7t4 to 10
cents) a day, It Is quite a tax oven
then, and the administration no doubt
had this In mind when they placed the
aunussion at that figure. Another
reason Is to give them a chance, not to
visit tho exposition once, but often
for the boIo purpose of education and
study of the advancement In art, acl
once and manufactures.
No Sunday In Japan,
'The reason for such a largo at
tendance was not because It was Sun
day, but because It was the first day
of the month. Hut penult me (o ex
plain what Is not generally known.
There is no Sunday In Japan, In tho
term we understand It. Factories,
stores, snops and everything go on
right along the same as any other day.
But there Is a first and HHh nf each
rnomu ueing paydays on which no
factory hand works, Thoy claim theso
as special holidays; for tho other
days of the month they are practical
ly prisoners, working almost all day
and night. No doubt these two days
eacli month will be grand gala days
of the exposition.
"The only building which was com
pletely ready Is the vast and largest
of all, containing tho Japanese ex
hibits, in which can bo seen every
conceivable attlcle of manufacture ar
tistically arranged a place well
worth a week's visit,
Oregon's Exhibit.
"In the foreign sample exhibit build
ing, in which we are located, Oregon's
exhibit was tho only one ready for In
spection, and I was pleased when the
high officials called niiuu me and
through their director-general. Count
Ota, expressed their gratification and
thanks for being ready on opening
day, will be fully a month before
all the fprelgu exhibits are complete
ly arranged, and right hero I wish to
say that It is an Imposition and an
Injustice to those exhibitors who are
ready to have tho dirt and turmoil
of installing exhibits going on about
them, and also an injustice to the vis
itors who have paid their fee, evor
so small, to seo the exhibits.
'Mr, Fried Is still here, studying
the exhibits."
