The Inst annual report of the state superintendent of public Instruction contains some interesting statistics about Umatilla county, from which the following excerpts aro made: There were In 1S73 1,492 children of school oko; In 1902 there wore G.046 children of school age. In 1001 there were 1SS teachers employed in the county; in 1P02. 207. There are now in the county 97 teachers hold ing stnte certificates or diplomas. There are now held In the county 42 first grade certificates, five primary grade certificates and lfi permits or temporary certificates. Non-union men who are working in the place of strikers at Pittsburg, went out on strike Monday because one of their men was discharged. Charles Tngman, once very wealthy and a rival of Armour & Co.. in Chi cago, died from starvation Monday and was buried in the Potter's field. The strike situation at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is assuming nn acute phase and there is even- indication that every mine In that district will be closed down by Thursday, The record of voracity belongs of right to a stoat recently caught at Pennyhlll. During the night the blood thirsty little cieature had killed 11 turkeys, 30 ducks and 20 chickens. The Investigation of the police de partment at Kansas City, has devel oped the fact that the Jailers there have released prisoners npon the pay ment of money and the records of the ense were afterward destroyed. This play Is pronounced tho grand est of nil sensational melodramatic productions and Is now for the first time touring the Pacific Coast States. The great cotton press scene is one of the most realistic nnd sensational on the American stage. The company Is composed of 15 people nnd carries n carload of special scenery. There were four school houses built during the year 1902. There Is carried upon the school houses of the county $07,515 Insur ance, and there are but three other counties Linn. Marlon and Multno mah which carry a greater amount of insurance upon their schoolhouscs. The county superintendent reports that during the past year ho visited 100 schools, spending an average of one and three-fourths hours in the schoolroom upon each visit. He trav eled (1.000 miles In visiting schools and doing other necessary nnd official tiaveling. Last year there were held In Umatilla county 30 local Insti tutes, while there were hut 117 local institutes held in the entire state. The next largest number held in any one county was in Union, where nine were held. In the school libraries of Umatilla county are 4.19S books the largest number of nny county in the state except Multnomnh, which has 13,937. In the private schools of Umatilla county were last year enrolled Sf9 pupils, which number exceeds the en rollment In the prlvnte schools of any other county except' Multnomah and Marion, each of which have more. At the close of the school year there was $3,riS9.31 In cash on hands be longing to the different school dis tricts. At the same time there were hut six counties in the state with n greater amount on hand. The esti mated value of ihe schoolhouses and grounds of the county is $121,270. and thnt amount Is only exceeded by three other counties Clackamas, Marion and .Multnomah. ED MURPHY. Poindexter, of Prlnevllle, Dead. .Mrs. George R. H. Miller, a pioneer of tho year 1S45, died March 23 at Oregon City. She was one of the Im migrant party that In trying to reuch this valley took the famous Meek's cut-off. Terrible hardships were en countered, and some of the party died before the journey's end was reached. The most or her life has been spent in Oregon City. J. N. Poindexter died in PrfnevIIle Ore., .March 20. 1903. Mr. Poindexter was born in Green county. Illinois, December ff. 1S29. He crossed the plains in 18!?.' and settled In Lane comity, where on Mutch 1. ISou. he was married to .Miss Elizabeth E. Mc Cord.
