Determined That the State Shall Not
be Further Robbed Trouble Ahead
for Base Hunters.
Salom March ?0. Tlii Hun land
business has come to an abrupt end. j
Governor Chamberlain has rofuscd to
make any more selections of lieu
lands on mineral baee, or -"vtn lor the
purpose of setting up peleeMen. here
tofore made, but which have fallen. 1
In answer to every application that
lias been made the governor has do-1
dared that he will not n.nke any i
more selections until it has been final- i
ly determined what amount of those
already made will fall.
If the quantity is large lie will con
tlnue his tefusal to proceed. If the
amount is small, he will permit selec
tions in all cases where the purchns-'
ers furnish the base and pay the state j
the difference between the amount '
they have already paid for lieu lands. I
His determination is that the. credit I
of the state shall no longer be hawked J
auout uy neu ianu operators ior ineir
own gain. As a consequence of Gov
ernor Chamberlain's taking this firm
position, the lieu land operators nnd
purchasers are in sore straits and
are fearful of the outcome.
It has been talked around quietly
In timber land circles for several days
that the governor has sprung a sur-1
Prise on the land grabbers, and that ,
there is trouble ahead for the base
hunters who have sold invalid base. '
It has been rumored that there is
also consternation in certain small
circles where the effect of the gov
ernor's determination is likely to
prove serious In the extreme.

in several branches of the service are
dissatisfied. The firemen nlso have
sent a committee to the company to
request a hearing on the schedules
ol certain runs.
The Freighthandlers' Union of this
city, numbering about 300 men, has
addressed to the management a re
quest for an increase of 1.1 per cent
