Of the Ten Millions In Irrigation Fund for the West, Three Millions Are Available for Immediate Use. Washington, March 16. Tho an nouncement today that Secretary Hitchcock has decided to begin the construction of national irrigation works In Wyoming, Montana. Nevada. Arizona and Colorado does not preju dice the project which Is to bo car ried out on Butter creeK, uregon. The five nroiects referred to are 1 those that have been under luvestl-' gatlon bv the geological survey any. where from three to 12 years, and are ! th ones on which the most detailed j examinations have been made. j But in no case have the examlna- tions been completed nor are plans 1 ready for advertisement. Today's j announcement means that the depart ment will Immediately turn Its at-) tention toward acquiring full title to the reservoir sites and rights of way of canals by purchase or condemna-1 tion, wherever private ownership con- j filets with the proposed work, and If in am- Instance the title cannot bo oh-1 tatned the nroiect will be abandoned. The geological survey, as a result of former study of these several locali ties, now has rough plans for reser voirs and canals, and final plans will be hastened and contracts let. As heretofore stated, the geological survey has two experts now making surveys and examinations cn Butter creek, and a third will soon join them. These examinations will be final, and, when their report is made nnd a project roughly outlined, pro vided no unforseen obstacles arise to show the project Impracticable, this work will be added to the approved list and steps taken looking to con struction. Hydrographer Newell roughly esti mates that It will cost $7,000,000 to construct the five projects designated bj the secretary, while the reclama tion fund at this time aggregates about $10,000,000. thus leaving $3, 000,000 available for other projects that may be approved later. Further more, the fund Is constantly growing so there will be no lack of funds with which to commence work on Butter creek, when the plans are finally for mulated. Part of the funds to be used In other states are those derived from sales of Oregon lands, hut a major portion of the Oregon fund for the past 1t, years remains to Its credit, and Is more than enough to build the favored irrigation system In that state. The regort of the Oregon Irrigation committee recently forward! to tho secretary of agriculture flna'lv found Its way to Mr. Newell, and has by him been referred to the fleli oillcers In Oregon. He was somewhat surprised that the committee made no recom mendation, and has therefore asked the field officers to examine all the projects named, as they can conven iently reach them. The field force will oe augmented by new men from time to Ume. and examinations and surveys will be continued throughout the summer, although the first work will he the completion of Investigations on Butter creek. I have a larger and better list of Farms, Stock Ranches and City Property to soil than ever before. ' Also a big lot of land in tho coming wheat section of Eastern Washington. N. Walker, Mrs. James Matthews, Mrs. Alvina Northcutt, Mrs. S. S. Knighton, Mrs. J. N, Fitch, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Mary V. Charl ton are applicants for the position of matron at the state prison, cre ated by the last legislature. Tho salary provided is also quite an at traction, to say nothing of the honor of holding the office. There may be none of them appointed, and the mat ter may be left to the superintendent. In many state prisons the warden's wife acts in this capacity. There Is no suitable quarters at the Oregon prison for a matron. Salem Journal. Though not so large in the number of exhibits as the New York and Chicago exhi bitions held recently, the Boston au tomobile show in Symphony hall this week is none the less Interesting to lovers of the motor vehicle and those engaged In its manufacture. The ex hibition has attracted entries from all the leading manufacturers In the country and all tho machines display ed are the latest models. Some of these were completed too late for ex hibition at the New York and Chicago shows and are now displayed to the public for the first time. One of these Is a big gasoline touring car and an other is tho first electric tonneau to be shown in this country, the latter resembling in a general way tho great machines of France and Germany. Oae application convinces continuation cures. Read the proof: T. II. Thomas, attorney, of 600 East Bennett avenue, Cripple Greek, says: "I just as emphatically endorse Doan's Ointment today as I did In the month of June, 1899. At that Ume I went to the drug store for a box which I used for itching bemorrhoifles. A few ap plications gave wonderful relief, and a short continuation of the treatment cured me. There have been symp toms of & recurrence since, but a few applications of the remedy never falls to bring positive relief.
