Hooker & Co., Buffalo, N. Y. F. W. Schmidt & Co. A DELIGHTFUL BEVERAGE I A SAFE STIMULANT I A GOOD MEDICINE I JOHN SCHMIDT I WILL IT GROW Hill? MOUNTAIN LAND WILL BE EX- PERIMENTED WITH. W. R. Hawley, of Sumptcr, Purchases Large Tract of Timber From Which Logs Have Been Removed and Will Convert It Into a Farm. W. R, Hawley attracted some at tention from Interested ones last week nt the delinquent tax sale In Uaker City, by bidding In numerous tracts of land, says the Sumptcr Miner. Those who had put many hours roIur over the list of desirable pieces of proper- ty which they wished to secure, did I not Interfere with Mr. Hawley's bids. It finally became noised around that , ho was buying lands from which tlm- i ber had been logged and abandoned j as worthless. He says It will raise hay, which is worth much gold In these parts, and . he considers it quite as valuable as either mineral or timber lands. The general Impression here abouts has been that hay can bo grown only on the low, damp lands. 1 Mr. Hawley has been experimenting for several years and has convinced himself that it will also grow, with out irrigation, on the uplands; not, of course, at a very high elevation. The lands ho bought are along the first bench above the valley between here and McEwcn. At his home in this city on the hillside beyond the school house, al falfa grows luxuriantly. Last season , It was cut four times. Mr. Hawley has already bought from the owners 2000 acres of this j land, and he hid in at the tax sale 2400 acres more, in the same vicinity. Some of this he will secure through tax title. The remainder he hns ar ranged to buy. Last fall he seeded ten acres, as an experiment, and if It proves to bo a success his fortune will be largely augmented. It will also add hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to the wealth of this community, for there is perhaps, more money sent out of this country for the purchase of hay than any other commodity. If it can be raised here at home on these logged off timber lands, a new Indus try will be quickly developed and thousands of heretofore considered worthless lands will be made valua ble and profitable. The problem he Is now solving by actual experiment is whether seed should be sown In the fall or spring. BEHIND WITH FARM WORK. Winter Has Been too Wet for Putting in Grain. The few dry days of last week were Improved to the utmost by the farm ers of Southern Oregon, who are be hind hand with their work, having been greatly hindered in their farm ing operations by the extreme wet ness of the winter. Since the rains started, early in November, there has been hardly any time until last week, when It has been possible to get on the land to put in grain. If the weather for the next few weeks Is fa vorable to farming operations, a good crop may be counted upon as certain, but if the seeding Is delayed too long, the late rains may not materialize, and the result may he a short crop. The outlook for a bountiful fruit crop was never better at this season of the year. Rogue River Courier. THREW ACID IN HIS EYES. Condon Woman Commltsa Serious ' Crime by Mistake.
