of the inmates of the institution for
the month had been comparatively
good: the case of smallpox has recov
ered and returned to his work-
One case of measles developed at
the farm in one of the attendants,
who was promptly put in quarantine
and has recovered. Sufficient time
has elapsed to Justify the belief that
there wilj be no soreadinr nf Mtbor
of these contagions diseases. The
work in all departments is being push
ed as fast as possible, and we hope
to be ready to begin work on the new
buildings as soon as the weather is
permanently settled .
Superintendent Calbreath
privately that preparations were al
ready being made for beginning work
upon the new buildings for which ap
propriations were made the past ses
sion. At the farm there will be an
other closed cottage constructed simi
lar to the one built last year, at a
cost of HS.00O. and an extension will
ce nnut upon the kitchen and dining
room for which the sum of $4000 has
been provided.
At the main building the lavatories
"Rill be remodeled and enlarged for
which work $10,000 has been appro
priated. According to the recommend
ations of State Food and Dairy Com
missioner J. W. Bailey, who made an
inspection of the cow and horse sta
bles last summer, the sum of $10,000
has been appropriated to replace the
condemned and disease-infected build
ings, and a dairy bam of the most im
proved pattern upon sanitary lines
will he constructed and also a new
horse barn with all the modem Im
provements. The original bill called for brick
buildings, but the legislature thought
that wooden buildings would be Just
as substantial and serviceable, and
the allowance was cat down from $15 -000
to $10,000. There will al3o be a
new piggery baflt to replace the one
destroyed by fire last fall, at a cost
of $1000. and $1500 has been appro
priated for the completion of the nrrar.
