Mr. Mil- tie man who put in the Walla Wants New Pesthouse. Dr. Vincent is very anxious that the city do something toward the construction of a pesthouse that shall eb a credit and not a disgrace to the city. He favors the erection of a brick structure that can be adequately warmed and otherwise made comfort able, and that shall be located con venient to town. He emphasizes the absurdity of such extreme isolation as is practiced on the victims of smallpox, declaring that a fence that is high and close enough to keep thoughtless and ignorant children away from the building is all the Iso lation that common sense demands. He agrees that half of the public hor ror of smallpox has its origin in sup erstition, and that its dengers are grossly exaggerated. Further, that the reasons why a pesthouse is al most invariably put In some obscure and inaccessible place are because the doctors fall in line with the prej udices of the people, not because there are any good reasons for ex treme isolation. Saylor, of Butter Creek, 10 miles southwest of Echo, has been at Athena several days, returning home via Pendleton last evening. Mr. Say lor, who is au extensive cattle-raiser, declares that he has no choice for beef cattle between the Hereford and Shorthorn. In his opinion, either breed Is fully the equal of the other, and he thinks the unending argument between partisans of the two breeds Is far fetched and has no basis ex cept simple difference in taste. The farmers all over this part of the county are keeping barns, houses, corrals and fences in good repair. Stock Is In good condition and per fectly healthy. Japanese Methodist Here. Rev. G. Tsuruda, who is at the head of the Japanese Methodist Epis copal missions of the state of Wash ington, is in the city, arriving last night. Mr Tsuruda's headquarters are at Spokane. He has come to work among the Japanese railroad la borers, of whom about 20 reside at this point. The czar has ordered the Immediate construction of the proposed Idensal-mi-Kayana railroad, so as to give em ployment to the Finns who are suffer ing from famine. The Girl Who Built the Famous Red Cottage. On the sand dunes off San Francis co near Cliff House, stands a little red cottage that is entirely the work of two San Francisco society girls, says a visitor who recently returned from there. Misses Joan and Wanda Hadenfelt who live in a palatial home, decided that they wanted to try life by the seashore. They had an old street car moved down to the sand dunes. and without assistance transferred it into a cozy cottage. They added porches, kitchens, cornice, roofs and posts, and they painted the whole cottage a dark red. They built a fence around their little plot, and hung a front gate. Then Miss Joan stood on the roof of the front porch lor three hours, lettering the sign Water Wild" acorss the front of the cottage. With some difficulty the two girls knocked the seats out of the car and transformed the Interior into an Oriental room. Miss Joan made the kitchen table, and Miss Wanda set up the sink. The girls entertain at their uew home and declare that they will live there all winter. Miss Joan Hadenfelt was oueen of the Mardl Gras festival in San Fran cisco a year ago. She is a brunette of magnificent proportions and is con sidered the most beautiful woman in California.
