CLOPTON AGENT 800 MAIN STREET WESTERN RESERVES CONFERENCE ON LAWS FOR THE WEST. Game Preserves and Land Commis sion Considered by President. Washington, Keb. 18. President Roosevelt recently held a conference with Representatives Jones of Wash ington, Mondell of Wyoming and La cey of Iowa, at which the bill author izing the president to set apart within forest reservations areas to be known as game preserves, within which game, fish and birds shall not be kill ed, was briefly discussed. Both Jones and Mondell objected to tho bill, as serting that it would render the state game laws Inoperative within such reserves, while Laccy contended to the contrary. The president, while deeply Interested in the proposed legislation, was Inclined to admit the olaini of the two opposing members and it is bejleved no further effort will be made this session to pass the bill. The' president also dlKcussed with these members pending resolutions providing for the appointment of a public lands commission of five per sons, to i Investigate and report upon the working of the timber and stone, desert land and homestead commuta tion laws and to make recommenda tions for needed changes in these laws, together with legislation looking to the disposal of timber on unre served public lands and providing an adequate means of regulating graz ing on the public domain. rne president anu members agreed that such a commission properly con ducted would gather much valuable information, which would be useful In guiding congress In future land legis lation. The resolutions provide for five commissioners at $400 per month. This legislation will be urged and probably adopted before adjournment. Upon the re sult of the (hree months' hard work at tho target practice about to bo un dertaken will depend the summer plans of the North Atlantic squadron. The fleet is working out an elaborate and progressive set of exercises and drijls devised by the general board, the purpose being to familiarize thf officers with naval movements on a larger scale than has ever before l een attempted in the United States navy. Tho fleet has worked through the program step by step, antl tho three-months' program now In exe cution will determine whether or not the gun work of the ships has been bo far perfected as to warrant the bo ginning of the next phase, namely, a longdistance cruise In the fleet for mation If this work Should be uu. dertaken next summer, of which Sec retary Moody is by no means certain, the North Atlantic squadron will make directly for the Azores nnd If the combined movement Is successful up to that point the uhlps may go on as far as Lisbon, but it is not in tended that they shall vjsit Northern Kuropo under any conditions.
