The Modern Dead Sea Sand Lake
j That Travels with the Shifting of the
Sand Dunes Nothing Lives in the
! Salty Waters of Lake Albert.
Goose lalie Is the largest and most
Important lalte possibly In l-al;e coun
ty. l.aUeview, the county town, lies
at the head of this lake, and It is not
onl the most important town in tho
county, but is surrounded by one of tho
richest farming and stockraisinir see
Hons In the state. Goose lake is said
to have been named for the fact that
in early days myriads of wild t;eese
dotted its waters and fed on the natu;
al meadows that bordered its shores.
They have not entirely abandoned the
place yt. nnu ducks and brandts and
cwans and other featb?ied game "till
Irequent the place.
Goosu lake is 40 mileo long and av
erages Iron one mile to 10 in widt!
and its depth ranges from a lew feet
to 10Q. About hall of the lako lies
hi Oregon while the other half lie
iu California, From oue end to th
other its shores are lined with com-
"fortable homes surrounded with rich
farms that produce everything that is
grown in such a Knitude. While tho
' people of this section have great sport
t in fishing, bunting and skating on the
lake, but little boating is done. Al
though a stioug breeze is continually
blowing and the water is of sutllvient
depth a sail is never seen on tills vast
body of water which is boasted of as
the "inland sea" of Oregon and Call
lornia. A small row boat may Ip s.een
now and then near some ranch house
built close to the water's edge, but
these for seme reason do not venture
far from shore.
I A Modern Dead Sea.

1 10 miles in width. It lias no outlet.
I It is fed at one end by the Cliowaucau
i River and at the other by n hot spring
that bolls up like a creek fiom the
earth. Like the Dead Sea, it never
makes any pieceptlble change in depth
' and its water is so impregnated with
minerals or other substances that no

and its shores are lined with fossils.
In fact, It is the center of the gieat
Lake County lossll fields. That 'lie
lake moves from place to place Is veil
i fiod by the citizens of t)'i- county who
1 have lived there for a number of ycais.
They can point out wheio it was at
different times. It is explalmd that
'the wind blows continuously from one
direction for a Ion gtime and at certain
seasons of the year; that the sar.d Is
'moved like dust in Die storm; the lakr
is gradually filled at ono side and th.
sand from the other sld-s Is blown out
.and the water follows the hole made
by the wind. They riaiiu that In one
