Mrs. Dye Finds Librarians Who Never Heard of Her Heroes Journals Locked Up for One Hundred Years Had Never Been Read by Hlstorl ans. "Washington, Feb. 10. Tho Lewis and Clark exposition Is fast coming to the notice of the people i f the East, and one of Its most earnest advocates resides here In Washington. At his Instance the Washington Post recent ly printed the following story regard' ing the 1905 exposition and relative topics; The expositions which arc being rlanned for St. Louis in 1PC4 and in Portland in 1905 have avakened Jn-tf-rest in the families of the nation's Iwo creat exnanelonlHts. fiantnln Mer iwether Lewis and Captain William Clark, who, with a party of 45, were tbo first white men to cross the Rocky mountains and reach the Pac'lc coast. Of the many thousands of people who find pride In the events', attend ing the close of the century since the completion of the historic expedition, none feels a keener Interest than Ma jor Hancock Clark the eldest son of the eldest son of Captain William Clark, -who Is now temporarily resid ing at 1C0C K street, in this city. Major Clark has devoted himself to a study of the exploration of Lewis and Clark and the incidents which Is'1 up to their overland trip to the Paciflc roast, and has glv6n to historian." of recent days much Information which had been carefully guarded In the family annals. Unless something unfoiseen Inter feres, President Itoosevelt arid Major the eldest sou of the eldest son of Captain William Clark will have a very Important part In the opening of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition at Portland, in 1905. Harvey W. Scntt, vlc!-prcsldent of the exposition was in Washington lecently, and secured prmulMS fmm both the president and Major Clark that they would attend and par-lcloato If not unavoidably prevented from do ing so. Regrets Lack of Records. "I regard it as lamentable," said Major Clark, "that comparatively lit tle was recorded of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Two years ago Mrs. Eva Rtnery Dye, the Oregon his torian, called upon mo at Detroit, In her seaich for information regarding the expedition, and she related to me some humorous experiences. At Dos ton she was unablo In And anything Leyond the government reportB. She was taken to the Washington elm. Longfellow's house, the galerles of art, and graveyards of revolutionary heroes, the old tombs, of the Frank lins and John Hancock, anl Otis and Adams, and Paul Revere, and even to the lowly mound of Mother loose, but nobody knew anything about Lew Is and Clark. "Mrs. Dye went to Philadelphia bud called at the office of the Histori cal Society and found that the 11 brarlan in charge had never heard of Lewis and Clark, and another officer said that there must be some mis take, as there were no documents In Philadelphia bearing upon a Lewis and Clark expedition. At Independ ence Hall the curator knew nothing of Lewis and Clark or of the existence of journals of tho expedition.
