Flathers, of Prescott, "Walla Walla county, went through Pendle ton Saturday with three head of reg istered Herefords, a cow, calf and a bull, from the ranch of George Chand ler, of -Baker City. All the animals are thoroughbred. Mr. Flathers paid $250 for the cow and calf and $125 fo rthe bull. The latter animal is eight months old and Is said to be one of the finest thoroughbred Herefords In this part of the state. Mr. Flath ers now owns 20 registered Herefords and GOO head of grades. Mr. Flathers came to Southwestern Washington in 1SG0 from California, where he had lived six years, and to which state he Immigrated from Kentucky. Feed Choppers. W. ,L. Purcell and I. N. Thomas and son will build three residences the coming spring, on their ranch, nine miles west of the city. They will also build two barns and put fencing around three-quarters of land. They will also break 1,000 acres of new land this spring and coming summer. They have in COO acres of winter wheat, every acre of which is looking finely. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. One of the most thriving and pro gressive literary societies in the coun ty is at Sand Hollow, three and a half miles from Adams. Naturally the question of the legality of such a bid was at once raised. In the absence of County Attornoy Halley, Judge Hartman was referred to. His decision was that premium lids were invalid, that no bid would hold water that was for less than par or that offered a premium. Of course the low interest bids and the premium bids were made by representatives of the original owners of the lands, or ny those who would themselves get hold of the lands ultimately if they can, for the investment. Van Itiper, an Oregon pioneer of 1S50, died at Ashland, Sunday, aged 77, He was a member of the legislature from Jackson coun ty in 1872.
