One of the most picturesque figures ever known In Eastern Oregon, -was "Hair Oil Pete." a Texas scout and locomotive engineer, who run an en gine on the Blue Mountain division of the O. U. & N. back In the 'SO's. "Hair Oil Pete" was so nick-named when ho came to Oregon from Colo- ado, In 1S85, nnd tho euphonious title clung to htm during his dramatic career In tho Blue mountain region. He was a typical Texan,- strong lithe, impulsive, with keen black eyes, swarthy complexion and a wealth of long, black hair that hung half way to his walsL and his crowning mark was always dressed in tho most ar tistic manner, swathed In odorous oils and combed with the .nicest precision. Ho was an itrtventurer. rich in in teresting traits, dashing, brave, dex- teroits with a gun and revolver, fond of notoriety, kind and generous to a fault, an endless story teller, a dra matlc figure among men, with his long shining locks, laced boots of tho most gorgeous design, a white sombrero and a dainty pair of buck- skin gauntlets, neatly fringed and silk embroidered, snowy white bosom and broadcloth Prince Albert. He held all the records for fast iuns and daring dashes on the road while he run an engine: He delighted to tell of his escapades and the crowds would linger late to listen to one of "Hair Oil Pete s" yarns. He had been prospector, Indian fighter, scout, mining engineer, detec tive and railroad man drew a good salary, always, and knew how to' spend It In the most gallant manner. Ho was a Beau Brummel among the ladles, possessing In all Its purity, that chivalrous Spanish air that made him the hero of all occasions. There was a Are In his eye that captivated and a soft bewitching tone in his voice that contained Whole chapters of meaning. It was "Hair Oil Pete" who organ ized a pos3e to capture the McCarty boys, who were accused of robbing the Joseph, Elgin and other baks in Eastern Oregon, and who were sup posed to be in hiding on Powder rivttr, in Baker county, near their great stock ranch, formerly known nie hod ueorge place. The McCarty's were known to be brave men, good shots, nervy men as ever followed the trado of brigandage and horsemen beyond compare. They knew the. rough ,country of Eastern Oregon and had friends everywhere, as they posed as stockmen for several years. To search out and capture this gang of outlaws was the height of Pete's ambition and he made elabor ate preparations to enter the hunt. He even secured a "lay off" from his run on the road and went to Haines and North Powder to Investigate the caset when the McCarty's appeared about that time In Colorado, and sponeci his plans. One of the most daring feats he accomplished while oh the O. R. & N. one which resulted happily for the company and a hundred unsuspecting passengers, was performed at Kame la, while he was running a helner at mat piace. In the spring of 1889. a "lan" order was given through a slight mistake or an operator to a froisht and nas senger train on the mountain. The treignt was going east and got an or der at Kamela to meet the nassenee- at Hllgard, 11 miles cast, while the passenger train coming west, got an order at La Grande to meet the freight at Kamela. thus mittlne: both trains in tho same foundry with the certainty of. a horrible wreck before mom. The pasenger had nassed Hlleard and was climbing up the mountain to ward Kamela unaware that a wrong order had been given. Tho froight puuea out of Kame a and started down the mountain, expecting to meet the oposing train at the foot About the time the caboose of the, ireight disappeared around the first curve a mile cast of Kamela the mis iate was discovered and a message was flashed over the wire to stop the east bound freight A helper engine was hummirig in a monotone under steam pressure, on the sidetrack. "Hair Oil Pete" caught the words of the operator. gasped, and In an Instant was out of the switch dashing down the grade on the helper. Bareheaded, eager eyed, leaning out of his window to catch sight of that caboose, the en- tiiiie careening ann lurcnmg around 10-degree curves, righting un acaiu only to strike the next curve with a mnt'0. fon-Ifii fiiKnn 1. l . I l .. K" -v- iuilc, lil U 11 1 b Li U Streaming a defiant warnine at every point, his long hair streaming in the wind, his hand upon the brake valve ready to grip the flying wheels at the first sight of the moving train, he made a four-mile run in less than three minutes, and brought the freight train to a stop, within a mile of the passenger, toiling tip the mountain igndrant ,of its peril. I ho train crew of the freight heard the wild whistle behind them and knew that something unusual was wrong and were plowing down when the helper, manned "by "Hair OH Pete" dashed Into sight and came to a stop a few feet from the caboose. He backed un tho mountain to Ka mela and went about his business. cooly as if nothing extraordinary had happened. It was part of his life to execute Just such adventures and he was uneasy only when the.-e was no opportunity for excitement. BOARD AND LODGING., EMPIRE LODGING HOUSE, CORNER OP E.
