Thought 90 Per Cent of the Cases of
Insane Miners Were Caused
Through Drink Considered Mining
Healthy and an Easy Occupation.
Philadelphia, Jan. 16. At the com
mission's opening this morning. Attor
ney Burr presented the Elk Hill Coal
& Iron Company and the Scranton
Company's evidence along tho same
general lines as the other operators
heretofore.
Dr. Dolan, who is employed by the
Erie company to examine into the
health and other conditions of the
miners and their families, at Scran
ton, Wilkesbnrro and contiguous
fields, was a witness. He said there
were 216 miners In the various poor
houses that he visited.
Speaking of his patients, he said
324 were insane 33 were cases of asth
ma, no rheumatism, 24 were helpless-'
ly crippled by mine accidents, three
permanently injured by mine and gas
explosions. Total number males, 692;
females, 467.
He said 90 per cent of the insane
were there through drink and that
mining-was a healthful, easy occupa
tion. Darrow asked him If he really
believed the drink statistics. The doc
tor said, "yes, the keepers tola me
so." Darrow thought prejudice might'
make some temperance cranks say all
the men In prison are there through
Intemperance.
"With my peculiar notions, I might
decide all the people were In the poor
house because they were poor, while
the mine operator might decide they
were all there because they would not
work hard enough or because they
wanted too much wages."
The doctor was finally compelled to
admit that his Investigation was of an
entirely superficial character and ho
himself placed small reliance on it.
