'Phona, Main .851. I G. MAJOR. Manar Wheat Market. Portland, Jan. 15. There have been a few unimportant transactions during the -week, but not enough to cause any commotion in the wheat ttade. Buyers are always in the mar ket at quoted prices. Sellers are few, as wheat Is scarce, and those having nny stock on hand prefer to wait a. while before letting go. It seems as it the market has reached the top, as no change for almost six weekR has been recorded for prices- paid for wheat. Exporters have discounted the fact that wheat would be difficult to secure, and slocked up early and are not over-anxious to buy at prices away abovo the market value. Euro pean advices a?e not very encourag ing, and the export trade Is paying more attention to. loading vesselsi than to buying grain.. Thero is hard ly an expoiter In the trade that has Jot wheat for a number of ships and home have very heavy stocks to rary them through the balance of the sea son. About 1,000,000 bushels of wheat have gone on ships this month from both northern ports and if the bal ance of the month keeps up as lively hf the fore part, January will have quite a record as an export month. Quotations range from 71c to 72c for club; bluestem, 80c; valley, 7C77c per bushel. San Francisco, Jan. 15. Markets hero are dull. Exporters are lodging chartered tonnage slowly, Sellers are unwilling to part with their pos sessions, and exporters are compell ed to pay fancj prices for wheat If ihey need the same. It will take a good rise in prices to dislodge .the wheat from the holders' hands, as buyers and sellers are apart as to their views in the price of grain. Ist year's exports to England are little short of remarka ble. The aggregate for the first n months was 803,814 head o.f eattte or 297,395 lu excess of the same period of 1801. Ireland Js now shipping more cattle than for two decades past. This development of grazing is hard on the small tenant farmer, who has the alternative of emigration or starv ation, but grazing peems to be the purposo to which Irish laud is best milled, Exchange.
