Amount on Hand Will Be Very Light
After This Month and the Local
Mills Will Need the Remainder
Unusually Wide Territory Covered
In Distribution.
Portland, Jan. 7. Exporters en
gaged In the distribution of bread-
stuffs are this season covering a
ider tenltory than ever Before.
Throughout, the season they have
b.en shipping steadily to Europe,
Africa. Chii.a, Japan, Siberia, Austra-
la, New Zealand and South America,
and a few booked for shipment to
nhitl, in the South Seas. The de
mands of the Orient have up to the
resent time been confined to flour
ut now Japan Is In the Portland niar-
et as a purchaser of wheat, and the
steamship Indranura. sailing next
week, will take out" a consignment
of about 25,000 bushels of Walla
Walla wheat for a Kobe miller.
January shipments of -wheat and
flour to all ports will be much heavier
than was thought possible a month
ago. This is due to the recent charter
of several spot or nearby ships. Uiv
less, however, there Is something
wrong with the estimates for the 190'.
crop, the wheat business after Febru
ary 1 will he of much smaller pro
portions than usual, although the
flour trade may be depended on to
hold up to last year's proportions,
and may exceed them for the remain
der of the season.
January shipments (flour Included)
from Portland will approximate 1,
900,000 bushels, and from Puget
Sound 1,700,000 bushels. Of this
amount, 1,500,000 bushels will go out
as wheat from Portland, nud the re
mainder as flour.
From Tacoma and Seattle, the ship
ments will be approximately 900,000
bushels of wheat and 170,000 barrels
of flour. These shipments will bring
the January total from Oregqn and
Washington up to about 3,C15,000
bushels. The shipments for the first
six months of the season from Port
land and Puget Sound were (flour In
cluded) 17,322,619 bushels.
The January shipments will swell
remainder of the season. The amount
of wheat required for feed and home
consumption in the three slates is
about 9,500,000 bushels. This, added
to the amount already shipped, will
sccount for over 30,000,000 bushels
of the crop. From that remaining on
hand, the mills must secure a suffi
cient amount to keep them running
until well into September, very little
new wheat being available before
that time.
Book Plates.
The Question of the use of the famllj
coat of arms vexes the American very
seriously. Originally nil book plates
were heraldic. That was In an age
when people generally could not read
and when the blazon of each family, at
shown on wearing apparel or small be
longings, was us well known and quick
ly distinguished as an autograph oi
photograph today. In the main, it Is
safe to advise Americans not. to use
coat' armor on their book plates. The
uncertainty of the actual right tc nrmi
and the extreme eUtllculty of getting a
drawing that one knows Is undeniably
correct in every detail ure strong rea
sons against its use. Heraldry Is too
exact a science to admit of liberties,
and It is no small achievement to draw
the coat of nrms with absolute correct
ness nnd yet with artistic feeling.
Though It is not very generally prac
ticed, It Is legal to copyright the book
plutc design. At least two plates are so
protected In this country. This would
seem to leave a door open for those who
wish to secure for themselves n per
sonal distinguishing mark, a quasi-
heraldry, for the drawing may be in
heraldic form as well as In any other.
