The declaration of dividends to amount of 6 per cent on the common stock of the American Cotton Oil Company invests with more than or dinary interest the annual report of the company submitted the present week. The C per cent Is not to be distributed all at once, 4 per cent be- ins payable December 1, 1902, and the other 2 per cent June 1, 1!03. The report shows that these divi dends are based entirely on the past year's results, and -were earned with in that period; hence are not depend ent upon or in anticipation of future profits. As a matter of fact the amount actually earned for the stock In the 12 months ending August 31, Finishing done fori1902 (tne term of the fiscal year) was near bridge. 'Phone I considerably In excess of C per cent. The profits for the year are report ed at $2,373,200, this comparing with 44,244.357 in the fiscal year preced ing. The requirements for the deb enture bond interest were only $135, 000 and the call for the 6 per centi dividends on the preferred stock $C11, 91C. making 74C,916. Deducting this! mere remained a balance of ?l,G2C, 290. The 6 per cent Just declared on the common stock will require only fl,214,22C. It follows, therefore, that over and above the C per cent de clared, a surplus ot $412,0C4 remains, which is the equivalent of 2 per cent more on the common stock. In brief. the late year's profits, were equal to about 8 per cent on the common stock. There is no mortgage, lieu" of any kind on any of the properties, and the total of the debenture bonds Is only $3,000,000. As far as the current liabilities are concerned these aggre gate no more than S3.402.874 includ ing $1,000,000 of bills payable, while on the other side of the account we And a total current assets In the sum of $8,051,817. As showing the care with which the property is being administered, one statement In the report Is rather significant. We are told that the percentage ot loss from bad debts for the past year has not exceeded the similar average of the previous 12 years of the com pany s operations.
