MODES TEND MORE TOWARD
LUXURY AND EXTRAVAGANCE
Only Hope of the Woman of Moder
ate Means Is That the Manufactur
ers Will Duplicate the Elements of
Costly Fabrics in Inexpensive Ma
terials.
New York, Doc. 29. Of course
everyone Is making Now Year rcso-
lutlons. One penitent New Yorker
has Just told me that her most heroic
rcsolvo Is to spend less money on
dreas this jear than last.
Now this certain somebody has
either not seen the new spring styles
which are beginnlg to bloom forth In
the shops or she has decided not to
live up to her reputation of being the
Dest-ciressed woman In New York. It
would bo malicious to say that she Is
not going to keep that resolve.
"Why, do you know," she admitted,
"that last year I spent exactly $15,000
on clothes!"
The woman who lives up to the re
quirements or fashion this year will
spend no less. This Is poor consola
tion for the sister whose nlways scant
dress allowance Is even more pinched
nowodays by the increased prices of
living necessities, but It Is neverthe
less a fact that the modes tend more
and more toward luxury and oxtrava
gnnce.
The one dim ray of hope that Is
neia out to those who connot spend
fortunes on dress Is the fact that each
year manufacturers become more ex
perts In duplicating the elements of
costly fabrics In Inexpensive materi
als. The advance spring fashions do
not snow anything startlinc as vet
for It is too soon for anything ile-
ciaea in miner designs, materials or
trimming In every thing that is
shown, however, there is Infinite chic,
combined with grace.
Return of Crepon.
Crepe effects promise to be In
greater favor for street wear. There
Is .even a promise of the return of cre
pon. This Is shown only In black and
Is limited to the separate skirt in In
stances where a back satin or lus
trous silk would be inapronos.
Many of the fabrics of two or three
seasons past are interwoven with
crepe in some way and given fashion-
aoie names. A pretty conceit Is in
what used to be known as bunting.
Through this runs a hair-line of crin
kled crepe with silk finish, making
the material admirably suited to af
ternoon wear. It is known as Alsa
tlon nun's veiling and comes in a va
riety pf naw colorings the prettiest of
V?!neh. !s the new oyster gray.
, A bodice In this goods Is tucked at
the back and allowed to fall in blouse
effect at the front. There Is a vest
of chiffon laid In groups of tiny tucks,
which are alternated with real Val
enciennes lace. Arranged over the
shoulders, back and front. Is an ap
plique of cream gulpre to form a scal-
jopea yoKe and the gulpre is deep
i-uuugu io nave me collar cut in the
same piece. The sleeves are tucked
and close-fitting, almost to the wrist.
Here, however, a slight fullness ap-
jcaa, saiuerea into a wrist or oyster
gray taffeta overlaid with lace in
sertion. -.A charming bit of contrasting color
Is Introduced In a piping of burnt
orange velvet around the edge of the
.collar, with a rosette of two shades
of the same coior, fastened upon thel
front of the bodice, '
Etamlne or Spring.
Etamlne, whose natural elegance Is
always enhanced by a lustrous silk
lining wll be one of the smart fabrics s
of spring. Artistic combinations In I g
uiua over gren miu vice versa are i
shown, associated with cream lace,
and quaint -fOrleatai embroideries.
Sometimes the embroidery Is substi
tuted by bands of silk or satin stitched
in fanciful shapes, but the lace Is
ever-annarent. In tact thoro win im
a very few gowns this year which dol jl
uuw met as we cwei aecorauvei ss
feature. ! &
A smart looking etamlne frock in
blue has the skirt bordered -with three
bands of petie gris, the coat taking
the form of a crossover pelerine,
cope-like on the shoulders and form
ing a little butterfly bow basque be
hind, revealing an underbodlce of silk
of a shade rather lighter than the
cloth.
Completing this costume Is a very
large bluo hat trimmed with black
ostrich plumes and lace. Something
of a reversion Is shown in the man
ner of arranging feathers on hats this
season. All of the smartest designs
have the plumes fastened fastened
under the brim, leaving tho top of the
hat to be converted intp a miniature
field of wild flowers of a tiny fruit or
chard. An Incongruous combination
it Is, this mingling of fruit and feath
ers or flowers and feathers, but the
result Is unquestionable and that suffices.
Walking Costumes.
The popular love for sports among
numeu is eviuencea just now in the
attendance at the skating rinks where
the ico Is 12 Inches thick and the
mermometer 65 degrees above zero.
The costumes worn are especially 'in-
lereouuK. mown, green, red and rich
navy nine are tho colore most oln
served, iiareiy does a black design
appear. Tho styles are so smart that
Jhey can easily be adapted ""to walk
ing costumes In climates -whero skat
ing Is not permissible, or where It is
not admired.
The Jacket Is an Eton, elaborately
strapped, or a Ilusslan blouse. The
favorite make of the skirt Is that with
the tight-fitting shaped cmplecement
nround the hips, with the skirt set
Into It In narrow knife-plaited foldB,
four or five Inches off the ground, for
such a skirt has a pretty outward
swing with tho rapid movement.
There is a cabled rumor hero to the
effect that the short skirt Is not held
In high favor In Iarls the place of
Its origin. Tho reason 'for this seem
ingly sudden withdrawal of approval
of I'arlslennes Is that the short skirt
robs my" lady of an opportunity In
showing how gracefully she can han
dle her skirt nnd. Incidentally, spoils
the idlsplay of the pretty petticoat,
which is a shine qua non of every
French wardrobe.
However this may be, the short
skirt Is unquestionably a serviceable
garment, possessing sanitary ndvan
tnges to which Its trailing rival has
no claim whatever.
Late Importations.
Some very pretty French piques,
chambrays and canvasses are shown
among the new wash materidls. Yet
the latter can hardly be classed among
tho fabrics that must make the ac
quaintance of the laundress, for thoy
display painted motifs which either
taken tho form of dainty little roses,
mingling with stars worked in ribbon,
and where the canvass Is used as a
trimming, one finds n turquoise hero
and there to give force to the pattorn.
Spider-web organdies, gauzes and
muslins are draped upon forms nnd
shown with appliques of white (low
ers at Intervals, made with satin
cloth, blended with tinsel nnd plain
cloth. Some of tho latest Importa
tions In trimmings arc cut In deep
Vandykes, worked in multicolored
cross-stitch and there are many waved
borderlngR of glace and tinsel, worked"
In light blues nnd pinks nnd In styles
In harmony with tho rtew art and
quaint Egyptinn colorings.
It is predicted that the long coat
will bo entirely eliminated from
siiring fashions. The present voguo
Is for a basque effect with something
of an elaborated postillion effect at
the back. Nothing Is smortor for tho
woman who Is slender and graceful.
What provision will bo made for the
sister moro generously endowed by
nature remains to bo sen.
