Is wood actunlly scarce In Umatilla
county? Is It possible that tlie actual
wood supply of Rastcrn Oregon Is
nearlng exhaustion? !
Those questions are often asked by
citizens of the valley districts who
are not familiar with conditions in
the mountains.
In a general sense, wood Is not
icatce. The Kieat timber belts that
leach from one end of Umatilla conn
ty to the other, along the summit and
slopes of the Itluc Mountains arc not
yet furnishing any supply to our fuel
markets.
A narrow strip of timber land, per
haps of a general average of eight
miles In width, lying along the Hue of
the O. It. & N., is exhausted.

Wagons Where Gcats Can't Go
At Allen's Spur, near Huron, wag'
on toads have been built around the
steep sides of the ruggeilest mouu
tains, to reach the lingering clumps of
timber that stood near tho track.
At Porter's Spur and Huron, chutes
have been built to tho very summit
of the most precepitlous binds and
the trees felled, cut into blocks and
slid to the foot of the mountain lo be
spill into cord wood, at the bottom
of the canyon.
From these extraordinary efforts to
get wood, it would seem, that un actu
al scarcity exists, when the fact Is it
is cheaper to build these temporary
chutes and get timber from high hills
near the track than it Is to haul it
four or live miles. Plenty of excel
lent timber is to be found at a dis
tance of four or five miles back In
tho mountains, but it will require a
great amount of expensive rqal build
ing to reach it in many places.
Twenty Years of Wood Hauling.
At Meacham and Kamela, where the
wood business has been vigorously
carried on for 20 years, the conditions
are different from those at supply
points ot recent location. The moun
tains are not to rugged and good
roads reach out for many miles each
way. At these points the best tim
ber land has been owned for years
and a constant stream of cord wood
and tics has poured to the mnikott of
ISasterii Oregon.
The reason so much Infeilor wood
is found ution the market at present
is because the choppers are now com
pelled to cut the poor grade of tim
ber left standing near the lallroad.
The best timber has been marketed
from llieso tracts for years, yet each
succeeding season, choppers aie sent
oer the sace "culls," to try to get
a few carloads of something in the
shape of wood.
As loads are made to better timber
bolts and more good wood Is brought
within reach of the railroads, chop

A Christmas Dilemma
Santa Claus would rind liimself in
if he had a breakdown on "the

would be just as disappointed if
their carriage or wagon should
break down on the road, unless
they had a first class repairing
shop to bring it to, such as you
will find Neagle Bros, always to
be. We repair a vehicle and put
it in fust class order equal to new
