! ArchbishoD Ireland Savs That
manlty is Entering Into a
Period of Development.
Archbishop Ireland made an ad
dress during the civic federation
meeting in which ho said the year
almost gone had confirmed the oriel
nators of the Civic Federation In their
conviction that they were engaged In
a great and salutary work that of
striving to bring together, to put face
to face, capital and labor, so that the
one would understand the rights of
the other, so that the one would be
willing to perform Its own duty to
ward the other, and that in this man
ner industrial peace should be made
to reign over the country.
"No greater task today," he said,
"could be given to a minister of
Christ's gospel than to contribute in
some little way to establish this reign
of industrial peace. It is not surpris
ing that there are arising disputes
and collisions. Humanity Is entering j
into a now period of development
and all development and all growths
in a being, whether physical or moral,
originate with the feeling of uneasi
ness and In a sentiment that new
conditions have been found and that
the moment has come for i.ew adapt
ability. The conditions which con
front us, far lrom being discouraging,
are really such as to give hope and
comfort, such as to bring us to seek
out solutions with all the hopeful
ness of approximate victory.
"Labor, In Its efforts to secure for
Itself a Just and reasonable propor
tion of the wealth that It and capital
together are creating, necessarily for
the tlmo being comes somewhat Into
conflict with capital. And what seems
at present to threaten somewhat pub
lie peace and to arrest somewhat the
growth of prosperity Is but a pro
cursory sign of greater bocial happl'
ness and of greater social wealth. It
Ib not at one meeting, It Is not In 0110
year that all these great ptoblems
can be solved. At the same, time we
must feel sure that a solution is com
ing. Humanity has sufficient mind
and has sufficient good-will to settle
all matters In which It Is vitally in-tfrested."

Men Identified With Trusts Are Said
to be Opposing Roosevelt.
Washington, D, C, U'c, 10. It in
evident that a meat many public
men are considering Senator Hanna
as a presidential possibility. Those
are the men who are closely Identified
with, or are supposed to represent,
large corporate Interests and capital.
They are watching everything In the
closest manner, and. If there Ik a pos
sibility of defeating Koosesvelt for
the presidential nomination they will
not hesitate to plunge Into the cam
paign. As the situation now stands,
all of them recognize the great popu
larity of the president throughout
the country and are aware that unless
something occurs to change that con
dition he will surely be nominated.
At the same time they figure that
16 months will elapse befoie the
fctates again elect delegates to the
National convention lir 1004, and that
In that time the wave of popularity for
Itoosevcltt which Is now believed to
be at its height, will subbide, and the
country wil be leady for another man
