Representative E. H. Test Elected on
the Promise That Ontario Would
Be Made the County Seat of Mai
huer Road From Nyssa to Vale.
Nyssa, Or., Dec. 9. The old feud
between Vale and Ontario for the seat
of government, of Maulieur county has
once more taken form. Hope Bros.,
of Vale, the present county seat, have
returned from a business trip to Chi
cago, where they raised funds with
which to build a little railroad from
Nyssa to Vale, with a possible exten
sion to other interior points. A party
of 14 surveyors are camped in Nyssa
today. The new road has been do
nated a plot of five acres of ground
near the new court house in Vale and
also the right of way through all
patented land along the proposed
line.
Vale is wild with enthusiasm nnd
property is rapidly advancing in
price. Nyssa business men are taking
advantage of the boom.
Hou. E. H. Test of Ontario, was last
spring elected joint representative
for Malheur and Harney counties on
the flat promise that he would move
the county seat from Vale to Ontario.
The Vale people have Insisted all
along that they should retain the
seat because of the tact that they
would have a railroad within two
years. It is now claimed that the
Oregon Italhvay & Navigation peo
ple have piomlscd Vale to build (he
little road In the event of a falling
by the waysido of the present propo
sition.
Numerous Surveys.
The survey comprises three routes
across the country, one of which
rounds the point of the mountains
within six miles of Ontario, another
route goes over the mountains In the
shortest direction, while the third
line would follow up the Owyhee di
vide and cross the river at the site
of the present wagon bridge at Vale.
Nyssa donates ground enough for
depot and station use. The distance
between Nyssa and Vale by the high
line Is 14 miles, with a bad grade,
while the distance around the foot
hill Is about 17 miles. Hope Bros,
are very reticent und not disposed to
divulge their plans but the project
has now reached a stage wheie it can
no longer be kept secret
