Strange fancies sometimes take possession of religious Beets, but the strangest of all Is probably the dis tressing mania that has enthralled BAUD Russian Doukhobors, who have located in Western Manitoba, says a special dlBpatch from Yorktown, Man itnlin. to the New York Times. In the Swan IUver district the govern mpnt In nnnrphpnslvp fnr the remark able craze that has taken possession or tnese colonists, a visit to uie cum munlty showed that the sights and scenes and the horror depicted were almost beyond conception. Will Not Shed Blood. It Is well known that the Doukho bors are adverse tq shedding blood. This Ik tho vphkoii thev emigrated from Russia, and it Is also the reason why the Canadian government exemp ted them from military duty as an inducement for their location on the prairie land of the West. As to what they should eat, this was purely a personal matter, but, as 11 appears, It wnc nun nf thp features that was overlooked by the government that will cause immense trouuie. In this country a man may eat what d If his rullcion dictates that he shall conform to a vegetable diet, such belieis are respecieu. ah might have been well had this state ot affairs been confined to vegetarian Ism, but the Doukhobors religions does not appear to be a finished pro duct. It has been constantly undergo ing changes. From the belief that It was a sin to eat meat, It seems a long jump to reach tho conclusion that It Is wrong to eat anlmai products, but these people have now given up eat ing milk, butter, cheese, eggs, etc., and the cows, oxen goats and fowl aie Increasing anu multiplying, aim waxlnir fat while the people are on the verge of starvation. Strange Beliefs. Having reached this absurd posi tion, It was but a step to another and more ridiculous one. If it were wrong to eat the flesh of animals, the same line of reasoning made It compara tively easy to condemn the use of leather harness made from the hides of God's creatures, and then followed the condemnation of woolen cloth ing, because wool grows on the bodies of sheep, which also belong to the Lord. The next step was still more sweeping In Us effect' on their eco nomic condition, It was wrong to make servants of the lower animals, to use them for beasts of burden or tor any other purpose. They had the courage of their con victions, and at once turned out their horses, cattle and sheep, driving them to "God's Hill." to forage for them selves, placing all the burdens of farm life on their own shoulders For all drawing purposes, such as hauling heavy loads on wagons, men take the place of horses and oxen. Twelve or 14 men hitched to a plow sufficed for this purpose anil It la tho only method employed by them In the cultivation of the soil. Women, even, are em ployed In this manner, though when coming into town men only are seen hauling the wagons nnd buggies, Every day In the streets of Yorktown dozons of men may be seen drawing wagons, hauling what little produce they may have for sale, and carrying back to their farms flour and other necessities. The Doukhobors are clad exclusive ly In cotton clothes, and wear rubber boots or shoes knit or woven with binder twine, which they buy for the purpose, Their food consists of bread ami water nnd Hnrh vegetables as they grow, and wild berries and herbs which they gatner. ineir inrins re neglected, and their stock, of which .. . . x. i n.lM In Ihn I iney uau tiiuuu, m ru""6 i . hills, where It will all dlo in the wlnl ter, or be appropriated Dy inose whu are not of their religious faith, and who will at least give the stock shel ter. With the advent of cold weather starvation and disease must certain ly follow, and they appear to know this, for they nave neen in corres jpondence with authorities In Southern California, Nevada. Arizona and Aus tralia, with a view to emigration to 'a warmer climate where the condl ' Mnnn wniild nnnlile them to subsist Oil the soil without tresspassing on tho possessions of the animal kingdom. It Is needless to say that no one wnntH tlmm nn thf- are still In Mani toba, an elephant on the hands of the government that brought mem from Russia a few years ago to de vnlmi thp nrnlrlp land of the West. The unsuccess of the Russian Doukhobors as farmers In the Cana dian colony Is an entirely unlooked for result of the work of Count Kco Tolstoi and hundreds of charitable persons, particularly thr Quakers, who sought to better the conditions of the peculiar but seemingly sincere religious sect. A Long Persecution. The Doukhobors were persecuted by Hip Piifiuinii envprnmpnt for moio than a century. The name means "Champions of tho Spirit." or "fapirit Wrestlers." Thplr nerRPCiitioii iiecail ill 1799, Paul I., nn lielnir informed that they denied his authority, gave orders that they should be banlslied to uie mines for life, and should never have the chains taken from their hands and feet. About 15.000 were transport ed to Siberia. In 1832 Alexander I. mm thpir, nermissioii to colonize on a Siberian farm, which, through their thrift and Industry, became very valu able. Their number increased to 25, nnn in 18S9 thev were ordered to military duty. They did not decline to fulfill the every-day duties of the soldier, but when they came to iace the enemy they lay down, and no puii iHhmpnt cnuld make thoin EO forward. They were constantly shifted about until reduced to about lu.iiiw. W. S. ItOWMAN, LIUniNH VIIOTOUIIA pher of thp city. Harvest views. In dlan photo for nlo. Flnlshlnc done for nrantenrs.
