The Henrietta Mills are anions the most important business Institutions In Echo. The plant cost In the neigh borhood of $30,000 and has a capaci ty of 150 barrels of flour a day. The mills are run on full time a creator part of the season, and it Is estimated that they reduce 50,000 bushels of wheat annually to flour. While a large amount of wheat is purchased from local producers a large amount is shipped in from the outside. The ways of commerce are such that wheat is imported to and ex ported from this place. Mr. J. H. Koontz, the well known pioneer of Umatilla county is the owner of these mills.. His flour is known for Its good quality throughout the country. Ad joining his mill are two large ware houses, one of which is used for stor ing wheat and the other is used for storing flour. The mill Is run by water power from the Umatilla river and it is ample for all purposes. Mr. Koontz also has a neat home, at Echo. He has a fine orchard adjoin ing and from a small meadow of seven acres, he cuts an average of 50 tons of alfalfa a year. Wheat Shipments. The Pacific Coast Elevator Com pany has a warehouse at Echo which has a capacity of 45,000 bushels. John Dorn is the local agent and buyer and handles for his company about 70,000 bushels of grain annual ly. There are individual shipments which run tho total to a much larger number. x Business Houses. Echo has two large general stores. These are owned .and managed re spectively by Charles 11. Miller, and W. H. Boyd. Mr. Miller bought the place owned by his father-in-law, J. H. Koontz, who had run the store for 25 years, a few years ago and has run it sucessfully ever since. He has a large and substantial trade. Mr. Boyd has only been In business two years, but he has a good trade. He handles a large stock of general merchandise including implements, and is one of the substantial business men of the county. R. Jones has a saddle and harness shop and feed and livery stable com bined. He is well equipped in every line and does a large business. J. H. Koontz runs a feed yard, a place where teamsters may furnish their own feed or purchase elsewhere, he giving them shelter and a place to feed free. S. A. Thompson has the only barber shop in town. P. T. Whltworth has a well equip ped blacksmith shop where he does a large business in the line of bis trade. He is well established, having been in business at this place for the past four years. P. B. Van Cleve also has a shop, but his principal business is the man ufacture of a water elevator of his own invention. The invention is prov ing a success and his trade is branch ing out at many points in the county. Frank Spike is also a local manu facturer. He Is the patentee of a rem edy for hog cholera. He manufac tures his remedies at this place and has a growing trade. A recent letter from the Prineville Land & Livestock Co., one of the largest concerns In the country, states that his remedies have given satisfaction in that section of country, and a large order was the result. The Hotel Platter, by J. E. Platter, has recently been remodeled and re arranged and is now one of the best hotels in the county. Mr. flatter also has a large patronage. The Echo Land & Lumber Co., bv A W. Robinson, recently from Spokane, is one of the busiest instl tutions In Ecno. Mr. Robinson re ports that a live building industry is on and that he Is selling a large amount of lumber. Improvements among the farmers are especially no ticeable. The prospects are good for extensive building in the spring. .inhn Dorn is nostmaster, veiona Dorn is assistant postmaster and Miss Nana Houser is deputy. The telephone line, managed by A. U. Thompson, Is doing a good busi ness. It was established about five months. C. S. Mudge is local railroad agent, express agent and telegraph operator. The depot has recently Deen eumrseu and there are those in Echo who expect one of these days to see Echo the end of a division of the road. This concludes the present series of sketches of Umatilla county. ward the building of the machines there. While it is not determined yet whether or not Ihe company will build the machines out and out there, this course is likely. The Iron and foundry- work will be made there and then It Is barely possiblo that this will be shipped to Pendleton and the wood work and setting up done here, but this course has not yet been determ ined. It' was thought when the proposition was first made to the capitalists of Pendleton that they would make every effort possible to have the plnnt for the manufacture of the Rlgby-Clove nnrvester established here. Tho com pany only wanted $25,000 In preferred stock taken by outsiders. This, they onered to give an interest of 8 per cent on so that tho monoy would have been safe to the invester, hut for some reason tho amount was not forthcoming and the plant will be built somewhere else. THE MELLMANN ROAD SCHEME, No One Was Taken In by the Com panyCould Sell no Stock Here Looking for Suckers Elsewhere. It has Leon quite a while since word has been heard from Henrli'l; Hcllmann, the electric railroad pro moter, and the people of Pendleton are beginning to wonder what has become of him. The last word from Mellniann was received from San Francisco. It was in the shape of a letter to the Walla Walla Statesman and in it he stated that "all the preliminaries had been completed and work would actually commence on the line in a few days." That was about two months ago Burt since that time the daughty promoter has dropped completely out of c.vls- tance, so far as Pendleton people arc concerned. A few days ago a man arrived in Pendleton and attempted to float sev eral thousand shares in the company at $25 a share, but ho met a cold re ception here as not a sucker could be found. The man then left as sud denly as he came and whether or not he is in some other more gullable locality trying to float his shares in an imaginable scheme or whether he has tumbled to himself and gone home is not known . Very few put any faith In the pro posed proposition to build an electric road between Pendleton and Dayton, when it was first talked but some hoped that the promoters had some money they wished to squander In up building this country and gave it all the encouragement possiblo. Scenic Effects. "I wonder." said the actress, "who could have sent me those beautiful flowers!" "I didn't know you cared about that part of it so long as I paid the bill," answered the patient manager. "But I'll send around and get the florist's name." Washington Star.
