Scarcity of Choppers In Blue Moun tain Camps May Result in Wood Shortage for This City and Walla Walla. "I expect this winter to work up about 12,000 cords and to do this I must have choppers. That is why I am in Walla Walla at present," said R. E. Porter.r of Meacham. "Last year I got out about 6000 cords, but there has been an unprecedented de mand throughout the country which has taken up about all the available j supply. Consequently the price nas advanced some. Walla Walla will have enough wood to last her through the winter, but Pendleton though nearer the base of supply is already experiencing a mild famine. Pendle- by 5000 cords as much wood as Walla Walla. The samo applies to coal. Secret of Good Wood. "I look for an unusual amount ot wood to be cut in the vicinity of Meacham this winter. Just how much I cannot say as there are many men owning timber claims who are con templating going into the wood cut ting business themselves. "There is something about cutting wood which probably most people are not aware. Timber cut In the winter while the sap Is out makes much better fuel than that worked up in the spring. Wood cut in the spring may appear to be first class, but there is a lack of life, that one finds in wood cut in the winter." Statesman. SECOND-HAND DEALERS. GEORGE O'PANIKL.
