Total $2,955,000
In addition to the fires In Multno
mah and Cackamas counties there
were also severe forest fires In Tllla
mool:, Denton. L.ine, Marlon anil
Clatsop counties. The damage by
these fires to timber and other prop
erty Is estimated at $955,000, making
a total of $3,910,000 lost in Oregon.
While there Is some government
land and 'much that Is owned by the
state in the burned region, these
heavy losses fall chiefly upon small
private owners.
Causes of the Fires.
A singular chain of circumstances
combined to make the fires so de
structive. Not only was the summer very dry,
but the two preceding summers were
wet in May and June, thus" Interfer
ing with the burning of slashings and
allowing an unusual amount of debris
to accumulate. In the early part of
September Uie wind blew from the
east most of the time. An east wind
alter it gets west of the Cascades,
is ready to absorb almost any quanti
ty of moisture, so that the forest was
soon in the condition of tinder. The
most direct cause was carelessness.
This is shown distinctly by the fact
that practically no damage was done
in the Cascade forest reserve, which
Is patrolled by forest rangers. In
many Instances the fires smouldered
for considerable periods without at
tracting attention, and this in the
lace of the fact that the past Beason
has been one particularly favorabla
to forest fires.
Many blazes started fiom the unex'
tlnguished camp fires of berry pick
ers or hunters; others resulted from
careless miming ol slashings; one
was known to have originated from
locomotive sparks. With the excep
tion of this cas3, reasonable preoau
tion on the part of Individuals would
have prevented the loss of millions
of dollars.
In the opinion of Mr. Cox, after
tracing many of the fires to the orl
gin, the most of them could have been
extinguished beioie they became sell
ous. The lesson taught is had there
been an efficient system of forest pa
trol in tucse localities It is doubtful
If any very serious fllves would havo
occurred.
