A Consequence of Short Grass and Over Crowded Ranges This Past Summer. Stockmen in Southern Oregon are predicting a raise in meat prices be tween now and the middle of the win ter. Consumers of beef and mutton who consider the present price of these products too high now will not welcome this news, although local stockmen say that conditions and weather from now to the first of the year will regulate the price of meat. D. W. Holston, a well-known stock drover, who spends a Tgreat ilea of his time in Southern Oregon buying cat tle and sheep, says cattle and sheep are not in the condition there that they were this time last year and that cattle and sheep intended for winter and spring marketB will have to be taken up and fed before they will be fit for the block. Feeding in Grant. He says: "I have just bought 40(1 head of 2 and 3-year-old steers which I have made arrangements to fatten tills winter in the vicinity of May ville, in Grant county. I have pur chased a number of stacks of headed wheat from the farmers there and these cattle will have the run of these stacks until they are ready to be turned off for market. Grass-fed cattle are no longer in condition for the market,, and as i' costs considerable to fatten stock by hand an advance in price is the natu Let Us Do Yotir Hauling We do trucking and hauling of all description atj reason able prices. WILLIAM COXXERLEY, Prop., Successtor to Hays & Connerley. plenty of sheep and cattle Iti Eastern Oregon, but they are not fit for the market without some feed." Local Exceptions. While the above statements are said to be partly true in Eastern Or egon by those in touch with the con ditions they are not so bad as Mr Ralston would have people believe. It Is true that the ranges were over crowded in this part of the state last summer and as a consequence range was kept pretty short. Regardless of this, it is stated that stock, as a whole, came off the ranges in as good condition as usual in the fall because of the favorable conditions of the weather during the whole season. It Is seldom that the stockmen have been blessed with a more favorable season than the one just passed. Al most to a man the stockmen claim that their cattle are in good condition. Owing to Weather. Stockmen say that the price of meat from now until spring will depend en tirely on the conditions of Hie wether from now until the first of the year. 11 it remains warm and open, meat will stay down but if it treezes up early and begins to bluster and storm meats will be forced up and the price of beef and mutton will accordingly go up. Otherwise there is little ap prehension of consumers having to pay a higher price for the meat they eat than they are now paying. 1 flSKJtV.K The J 900 Wash Machine hotels.
