T!i HORSE SHOW
BEGINNING OF THE SOCIAL
SEASON IN NEW YORK.
All Society Flocking to the City to
Attend the Great Event Republl
can oPIitles Top-Heavy.
New York, Nov. 14. Tho botrlnnliic
Ot the social season In New York Is
marked by the openlnp of tho Horse
fallow, for all society Hocks to town
ror this auspicious national event,
which usually takes place the third
week In November. The exhibition
this year will excell that of all other
seasons, both from tho social and
horsey" standpoint, for the number
or distinguished out-of-town visitors
will be much larger and there will be
more entries. Something of tho im
portance of this affair may be Imag
ined when it is stated that $850 was
paid for a single box this year. This
price exceeds any In tho history of
the show, last year's record standing
at $635. Visitors, however, are sure
to see the grandest display of beauty
and the beast ever witnessed and
since it is not often that society as
It is spelled with a big S turns out
en masse, one is not supposed to let
such a trifle as money stand in the
way of an attendance at the Horse
Show.
There are likely to be Interesting
developments in republican politics
in this state during the next two
years. The party has become "top-
heavy" so to speak. Six shears of
power In the nation and elgth years
of power in the state have resulted
In a condition which may be described
as "political dyspepsia,' the conse
quence of over-feeding on ofllcial pat
ronage. This is no mere word pic
ture. Those who are able to look be
hind the scenes can see readily enough
what Is going on. They see the clash
of personal ambitions, the contests
of factions, the workings of revenge
and even some of tho evidences of
corruption. There Is reason to believe
that certain aspects of republicanism
at Albany are no better than Tam
many In Now York. There are Hoose- f a f T f"
velt and anti-Roosevelt factions In lt US IO
this state. Friends of tho president T tj
are numerous and strong, but his ene-, X Oiit txAiiliSlR
mles are exceedingly bitter and thcyi
win strike at him whenever they can
do so without danger from his popu
larity, which has over been Increased
since the recent election. Kcpubll
canlsm In Brooklyn is In bad shape.
There are two or three factions In
this city altogether and there Is dan
ger at any time of a bad explosion.
Senator Piatt himself admitted after
the election, that the reduced republl
can majority was a warning to the
fiissenting factions In the narty. Only
the most skilful engineering on his
part can prevent the threatened ca
tastrophe.
Despite the fact that the coal strike
has been settled, the situation In
New York city Is acute and It is
hardly possible that Mayor lxiw will
be able to enforce the smoke nuisance
ordinance after today, as was origin
ally planned. It Is certain that the
normal supply of anthracite will not
be on hand In New York for some
time yet. A fair Idea of the nresent
state or the coal market may be ob
tained from the following story: The
president of one of the largest coal
carrying roads, who lives lu this city,
aBkod his dealer a few days ago to
send him flvt- tons of furnace coal.
The dealer replied that he could only
gno mm one ton, as he did not feel
that he could fipare more than that
amount for one customer. "Very
good," said the president. "I'll have
to bo content with what you can let
me havo.'1 The railroads are doing
their best to get the coal bore, but
the output of the mines for the vear
is from twenty to twenty-flve million
tons less than it was in 1901 and the
situation is dlfnculL It Is the poor
who will suffer the most under the
present circumstances.

Ho user's Old Stand :
Several of the larger commlslon
houses In Wall street are encouraging
conservative purchases In anticipa
tion of a winter's rise. A Drofesslon-
al market critic exulains this nttl-
tude thus: "When the autumn busi
ness begins to slacken outside inter
est in the market will increase. A
man whose autumn business has re
quired $100,000 suddenly finds he has
use for. say, $75,000. He brings the
other $25,000 to Wall street. Outside
money brought to Wall street is al
ways employed on the long side of the
market and many stock market people
have- learned to expect and count
upon a rising winter market without
knowing precisely how it is."
