A Short Historical Sketch of an Old time Criminal Who Has Operated in Many Parts of the United States Is Now in Australia. Chlcugo, III., Nov. 7. Advices from Australia, tells of the arrest there of Arthur Bentley Worthlngton on the charge of obtaining a large sum of money by false pretenses from a wo man who had become interested in his teachings and work as a leader of spiritualistic movement called "Stu dents of Truth." These advices give the local police their first information as to the where abouts of a man who, a quarter of century ago, was one of the best known criminals in the United States, but of whom nothing has been heard or Known for many years. Worthlngton was variously known in this country as a lawyer, banker, political orator, real estate operator, spiritualist, literateur, mining specu lator and organizer, bigamist and con fidence man generally. Many of the confidence games now well known to the general public were originated by him and he Is known to have made thousands of dollars out of his schemes. The police records of 30 and 40 years ago show that he has operated extensively In New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Utah, Kan sns, California, West Virginia, Geor gia and Washington. He appears to have been born In New York state, in 1847 or 1848, his real name being Samuel Oakley Crawford. He enlist ed In the Union army In 1864, reap peared after the war was over as a tompcrance lecturer, studied law for a short while, but in 1807 professed religion and preached as a Methodist minister In New Jersey. In 18G8 he married his first wife, one Josephine Erlcson Moore. The following year he deserted his wife and Infant daugh' ter, and shortly after turned up In Al bany. There ho obtained a large sum of money from an Ignorant farmer, was arrested and In 1870 was senteno ed to three years In the penitentiary. When he was released he was fairly launched on his career of crime. In 1874 he married (No. 2) in Chi cago, the daughter of a Boston clair voyant, whom he speedily deserted, for later in the same year he was in Ohio getting married to No. 3, who was the daughter of a well-known judge, whose name he forged to a note tor $3000. Kansas City afforded him now as "Eugene Bonner." a brief rofuge from these complications early in 187G, but lie left his shelter with a reward of f50 offered for his cap ture. A brief period of law work in Peoria, under the patronage of a lead ing light of a Christian Association, was interrupted by the expostulations of wife No. 2, which ended in his flight to San Francisco. Here marriage I UMBER Gray's Harbor Com. Co. Opp. VV; & C. R. Depot When getting figures from others on that lumber bill of yours, don't forget to come and see us. We carry a large stock of all kinds of Building Material including shingles, door, win dows, moulding, screen doors and windows in fact, every thing that is found in a first class lumber yard. with a wealthy widow, of whom he had borowed a trifle of $2,000, was dramatically frustrated by the receipt of a telegram as the ceremony was beginning, and the baffled but perse vering bridegroom sought a more con. genial sphere in Salt Lake City, where he became a Mormon, Is said to have preached in the Temple, and got away to Texas in 1S75, with great expedition and tho best part of $5000 lent by the conndlng followers of Brlghnm Young. In 1878, the apostlo of truth had found it well to remove to Detroit, wheer he joined a traveling company of actors. In this city, again, in the same year, he married No. 4 a Miss Emma Huntoon, under the name of "Bannerton." Abandoning the stage he settled in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, where he practiced as a lawyer for some time, gaining great confidence in the place, but borrowing money and forging a number of bonds and checks. When an Indictment for for gery was found against him, his part ner stood bail for him, and tho prophet escaped, leaving wife No. 4 During 1882 and 1883, the records show that "Worthlngton" traveled the Northwest as an English tourist, vis itlng many towns on the Northern Pa clfic railway, and cashing drafts for unknown amounts, which proved worthless. In 1883 he went to Bos ton, where he entered into partner ship with a lawyer, and lived In great style. Here he made the acqualn tance or a Mrs. John P. Sargent, a married woman, with a leaning to spiritualism, and the control of some money. Having met her at a seance the prophet .developed great assiduity in spiritualistic studies, and In Febru. ary, 1885, he Induced the woman to fly with him to West Virginia, leaving her husband, but not her money, be hind. The pair resided in Charleston, where a Mr. Dana was victimized to the tune of $3,000. About 188C the man disappeared altogether, and the police authorities of the leading cities In this country where he was well. but not favorably known had sup posed him dead until word was re ceived this week from Melbourne showing that he was nt his old tricks in that far off land. George Pulllon Torn From Bosom of His Family by Hands of Law Was Innocent, A peculiar story -of tho injustice of justice has just come to light in Walla Walla, says the Union. It concerns a father and mother and a family of the unusual number of thirteen children, a deputy United States marshal and the federal courU of Indian territory, Six months ago Georgo Pulllon and ills family came to Walla Walla, from the southwest t rrltory. The father took up a homestead In the new Franklin county country, but was obliged to reside '.n Walla Walla that he might support his wife nnd children. IJttie was known o' the Pulllons and they were given uo more than passing notice by the neighbors. Sud denly a strauge man appeared In Walla Walla and went to the Pulllon home. Then he nnd Pulllon departed and there was sorrow in tho house hold. i'lils was about two months ago and it developed that tho stranger was a lenutv United States marshal, and Pulllon was charged with the crime of embezzlement by the federal courts of Indian terlrtory. Letters to his children wore not en couraging. "If I'm convicted," he said, "I must go to prison and if that is tho case I'll uevor rctun'." The Pulllons, robbed of their chief support, were visited by a beconu misfortune. Tho two youngest chil dren were twins, a boy and a girl, a year old. Uist week t; e little boy died. Yesterday the gloom of the Pulllons was turned to Joy, vhen tho father suddenly returned. He had been ac quitted of the charge.
