Omans Secures Ball and is Released Finch Waives Examination and Is In Jail. V. E. Finch, tho Pendleton forger, and Loss Omans, his accomplice, were bound over to the circuit court yester day afternoon by Judge Fitz Gerald. Finch's bond was fixed at $250. and Omans' at $150. It was expected by Omans and his friends, his Innocence would be established at trial, but 11 was shown by the evidence that he cad made a remark to Finch, when they were attempting to cash the check, which proved that he had a knowledge of the criminal Intent of Finch. Omans' bond was furnished by his father and he was released from custody. tmch waived examination and as his bond hrs not been secured he is still in jail. WILL PENDLETON SCHOOLS COMPETE FOR PRIZE7 State Historical Society Offers an Opportunity for Essay Writing List of Subjects. The Oregon Society of Sons of the American Revolution has offered $10 respectively, for the best essay writ ten by any student in the public schools In Oregon, on any dtie of the following subjects: 1. The- Battle of Bunker Hill. 2. The Burgoyne Campaign. 3. The Treason of Benedict Arnold. 4. The Partisan Warfare in the Carolinas; Marlon, Sumpter and Pick ens. Essays are limited in length to 2500 words; must be written on legal cap on one side of the paper in the stu dent's own handwriting and must be accompanied by the certificate of tho principal of the school attended by the author, to the effect that the auth. or is a bona fide student of the school and has been in attendance thereon not less than six weeks during the school year of 1902-3. Essays must be forwarded to the chairman of the committee in charge, Wallace Mo Caninnt, 34 Concord Building, Port land, so as to reach him not later than January 15, 1903. In awarding the prizes the committee will be gov erned by these three considerations: 1. Historical accuracy, 2. Manner of treatment. 3. Orthography, grammar, syntas and punctuation. Any additional information relative. to the competition which may be de sired, will be cheerfully furnished by the chairman of the committee. The essay which is awarded the first prize, will be published in full, with the name of the author, in the public press. The society Is making every effort to advertise this competition and will mail jfbtice of (he contest to every public school in the state. The decis ion of the Judges will be announced at the annual meeting of tho society, which will be held on Washington's birthday, February 22 next. W. OF W. IN FOR PRIZE. In Honor of Mrs. Despaln. A party in honor of Mrs. N. E. Des pain was given at the home of Mrs. Susan Welch Thursday afternoon. Mrs, Oespain is a pioneer of Pendle ton, where she resided for many years, but recently has been living In Portland. At a meeting of the Women of Woodcraft this week It was unani mously decided that the lodge Should make a fight for the free room and nursing at the Sisters' hospital for the coming year. It will be remem bered that the hospital authorities have offered to give a year's free care and room to the most popular secret society in tho city. The contest is to be decided by votes at 10 cents each, the voting to be done at the Sis ters' fair, which Is to he given soon to raise money for tho work on the new hospital. The lodge that re ceives the most votes will be award ed this prize, whicli Will mean $730 to the order winning. The ladles have the support of the Woodmen of the World and between the two they stand a good show of coming out of the fight with the prize. After the business session several hours were spent In a social way. Stephen A. Lowell gave the welcome address and his speech was taken very kindly by the ladies at whom! he throw many boquets. Singing and recitations were than listened to, while some Indulged in playing cards. To finish up the evening's festivities refreshments were served and all ex pressed themselves as having had an excellent time. After having not seen each other for 12 years, O. S. Andrus, a promi nent Btockman of the John Day, and C. W. Andrus, of Walla Walla, broth ers, met at the St, Gxrge hotel last night and recognized each other. It was a pleasant surprise for each of them. They had lost track of each other and neither was thinking of the other when they met In the hotel lobby. O. S. Andrus recognized his brother first and after looking at him a moment the first word he spoke was: "Charlie, give an account of yourself." Then it was George's turn to be astonished for a minute.
