THEY TAKE STOCK
FROM LOCKED CORRALS.
An Epidemic of Livestock Stealing
From Railroad Yards Work for
Officers.
Within the past three weeks at
different points along the lino of the
O. R. & N.. at least three carloads
of livestock have been boldly driven
out of the stock yards of the compa
ny. The first crime of this kind was
committed at Raker City, a short
time ago, when a carload of thorough
bred bucks was stolen out of the
stock yards. The clues were followed
up anc1 the sheep were recovered In
the mountains of Baker county, on
the Canyon City road. They were in
charge of ap enterprising gentleman,
who was bent on improving the breed
of sheep in his section.
The next occurrence of this kind
was the mysterious disappearance of
a carload of horses, belonging to a
Wallowa county stockman, from the
La Grande stock .yards, last week.
They were recovered near the Cove
and returned to their owner. And
now Superintendent O'Brien offers a
reward for a carload of cattle, which
has been "spirited away" from the
stock yards at Durkee, recently. The
stockmen have some vigorous kicks
up their sleeve and should delay no
longer In delivering them. The pub
lic, assisted by the willing officials of
the company, can put a stop to this
thieving proclivity, to a certain extent
and some quick thinking and acting
will be In order, henceforth.

Railroad Rumors Denied.
A message from President A. L.
Mohler, of the O. R. & N. denying the
1 t!' effe-t that an
entire rearrangement of the division
and terminal points on the Harrlman
lines is contemplated, has put a live
subject in the background From in
dications along the O. S. L. and O. R.
ft N many have been led to believe
that such a move was on foot, and
lhat in putting into execution some
of the plans for future improvements.
Pendleton would be made a dlvteici
point. The roseate hope Is temporar
ily dimmed. From the position that
Pendleton now occupies as a trade
center in the Inland Empire, it would
be most advantageous to the roads
and the country adjacent, to have of
ficial headquarters located here where
there is a measure of competition in
traffic.
