New York, Nov. 1. Next Tuesday
votes will be cast Pinl New Yorkere,
ana the entire coumry. for all are In
terested in the result of New York
elections will know whether the Env
pire state is to drift Into socialism,
as the republicans claim, or be gob'
bled up by trusts, as democrats re
tort. The election is now near enough
for the usual biased predictions of
victory, and the registration has fur
nished the prophets a basis for their
several claims. The partisan indica
tlons are not very clear, as the de
crease is about the same in democrat
1c and republican strongholds. Where
the democrats find most hope Is in
the heavy falling off of registration
up the state, in the sections which the
republicans count upon rolling up
pluralities to overcome the usual
democratic vote In New York city.

Anent the very patent and not al
together pleasurable fact that the
cost of living in New York, as else'
where, has steadily Increased during
the past two as three years, much
complaint is being made about the
habit of both large and small trades
men raising prices on the slightest
pretext. The cause for the Increase
Is often removed, but the prices of the
edible continues high. For Instance,
the tomato crop a year ago was poor,
and prices of the canned article were
Increased. This summer the crop
was exceptionally good, but the
housewife Is still compelled to pay
famine prices for the tomatoes. In
nearly every article of food It is the
same story. Another factor in the in
creased cost of living here Is tho
higher rents. Notwithstanding tho Ira
menEe amount of building, the de
mand for houses and desirable apart
ments Is exceptionally great and
rents are up In proportion. Many eco
nomies must be practiced this win
ter. If the people of limited means are
to get along with any degree of pros
perity.
