The two special cars loaded with homeseekers, who were advertised to arrive here this morning from Mis souri valley, did not arrive and it is now stated on pretty Rood authority that they arc not coming. In other words they are not going to stop off at Pendleton as was announced. These two cars, containing fnm 40 to 50 heads of families, were to have been here on delayed No. 5 passenger train this morning, but If they were on this train they did not stop hero. This train was loaded with immi grants going to Western Oregon, but only one family stopped. It is inti mated that this train contained the crowd of people who were going to stop here, but owing to the fact that Pendleton people mail' vo eort to assist the railroad company in get ting these people here and 1111 ar rangements were mail? to receive or entertain them they passed en through, refusing to stop and see Umatilla county. This statement Is rirt -vlf!oil lm( 1rtnl-e 'rtM- m,iil, nc 'P-- .tub 1 ' 1 1 L I III "1 i 1 U-J I UlUUgll 11 WUS UUU. .1. H. ONeil, traveling passenger agent for the O. It. & N. Company, who was here yesterday, left on last evenings train to meet the Eastern ers and return with them to show them the most interesting points of travel and incidentally to guide them to Western Oregon, where they could find timber and ranches which they could procure at small cost. "This looks very much as though Pendleton was being passed up." said a prominent citizen this morning. "Pendleton was asked by the railroad company to aid them in advertising the resources of Umatilla county, but the proposition put to the Commercial Association did rut appeal to that body and the matter of printing toil ers advertising the county was drop ped. It is now state! that unless Pendleton does show herself to be alive and spend some money In ad vertising matter little effou will be made by the transporta'.l-jr. compa nies to get people io stop oif here to view the country." The homeseekers' rates have brought thousands of Eastern anl Middle States people to the West. Few of them have stopped in Pendle ton or Umatilla county. Each train is loaded down with immigrants, but they either transfer here for Eastern Washington or go on to Portland. These rates will be off after the first of next month, and after that, unless other arrangements are made, those traveling will have to pay the regular fare from the East to the West. ATTRACTIONS. Standing room was at a premium at Frazer's again last night, the usu al large audience thoroughly enjoying the Clara Mathes Company In "A Royal Spy." It Is a five-act melo drama with strong comedy Interest, and kept the audience In a state of breathless expectancy throughout. The plot, dealing with a persecuted French captain of artillery, is so viv idly suggestive of the late Dreyfus sensation that one wonders why the management has not made capital of that phase of the play, unless it be that Manager Welch's ambition for the original and unconventional would render such a course distasteful. Several new specialties were intro duced and all served to while the waits between acts pleasantly. At the matinee this afternoon the farce-comedy, "A Wife Wanted," is being presented, witnessed by a large audience, composed largely of ladles and children. The week's engagement closes this evening with Daudet's immortal play, "Sapho." Great Interest Is manifest ed In the production, as it Is known that Miss Matfies presents a clean and wholesome version of the master piece. A large audience will witness it, to laugh with tho foxy Ceseire, the hypochondriacal Ilettema, and be car ried from. laughter to tears upon the varying emotions of Fanny Legrande. CASCADE RESERVE.
