GEORGIA SHERIFF ON HIS WAY TO MOSCOW AFTER NEGRO. SpeaVt of Hl Country and Hl Trip Highly Pleased With Pacific Country. Sheriff W. W. Sutherland, of Cot foe county, Georgia, accompanied by E. L. Tanner, assistant cashier of the Citizens' Bank of Douglas, Ga., Is In town today on their way to Moscow. They are after Will Brunner, col orcd, who shot K. Whtte, a white man, down in cold blood In August of 1901. Brunner had no cause for shooting White, who was a peaceable citizen and after the negro1 killled White he fled to the West. He was traced for several miles by the offlC' ers and surrounded In a house, but managed to make his escape to the brush and after receiving a volley of shots from the officers, succeeded In making his escape. That was the last heard of the ne gro until recently he went to Moscow and made statements which lmplicat od him with crime. He was then ar rested by the chief of police of Mos cow and confessed to being the mur derer of a man in the Soum. Sher iff Southcrland had been camping on the negro's trail for the past several months and the officers of Moscow having been notified of the crime and being given a description of Brunner, they wired the sheriff of Coffee coun ty stating that they had the man wanted. Sheriff Southerland and Mr, Turner started Immediately after him and have been eight days on the road. Mr. Southeiland was asked what would be done with the negro when he got him back to Georgia, and he replied that he would undoubtedly be hanged according to law. He did not state that the fellow might be strung up by the infuriated mob, but as thiB is usually the procedure with such fellows in the South, this is the kind of a reception the, negro may re ceive. In speaking ot his trip and what he thought of this country, Sheriff Southerland said: "We left home eight days ago and have had a very pleasant trip. We are in no huny and are looking over the country we go through and ex pect to remain hero several days and take a thorough look over this coun try to Bee what It Is like. Our man Is in jail and as I have the requisi tion papers for his return, which need only be signed by the governor, we will not hurry to start back." Sheriff Southerland said he was not very well impressed with the ap pearance of the country of which they traveled until they arrived on this side of the Rockies, but was highly pleased with the appearance of things on this side. He said" that the ne groes were very aggravating to the white? in Georgia, as they were al ways committing some crime since their advent from North Carolina to the turpentine fields of Georgia. AH the way from 500 to 2000 are brought from the hills of North Carolina each winter to work In these fields as the white men cannot stand the work. These negroes are usually the scum and criminals who cannot stay tat home and are run out by the Infuriat ed whites. Sheriff Southerland alid Mr. Tan ner are typical Southerners. They cannot bear the negro and say if the people of the North had to live with them they would change their atti tude ot sympathy to hatred. The sher iff Is a staunch democrat and has served as sheriff of Coffee county one term and has just been elected to serve a second.
