Cattle and Stock.
While hi the mountains I met two
large bands of cattle one consisting
of 335 steers being taken to Butter
holding down a homestead here. In
all I have 320 acres of land and my
cattle have unlimited back range."
"The stock raisers here are all in
good circumstances. They have sold
their fat cattle; they have money In
the bank ; their winter feed for their
stock Is housed. They have plenty
to eat and drink. For the latter Is
coffee, milk or cider. Pure mountain
air, plenty of good, wholesome food,
strong healthy children are compen
sations for lack of transportation fa
cilities and for hard, bad roads."
This section is beautiful at this sea
son of the year. From the hill top
here, far below cleams the middle
fork of the John Day, showing long
stretches of grey, green or black
where the water is smooth or shorter
stretches of silver where it is broken
to white foam by the rocks In its bed.
On all sides stand the pink-red bodies
of the yellow pine, with the queer
alligator-skirt effects of their rough,

Mountain Roads.
Crossing John Day river and Deso

up the road the traveler comes to
Dale. Dale Is in a good timber belt
and is a mile from the Grant county

will see notices: "Please Do Not

But the rule soerns more honored in
Its breach than its observance.

Young Creek.
A half day's travel from Corvallls
brought me to Long creek. 'At long

point for a large territory. Four or
five stores, a couple of saloons, hotel

a good trade,
Over the ridge from ljng creek, six
miles distant, is located the llttlu-l
