OREGON and Union Pacific Headquartors for Traveling Mon. Commodious Sample Rooms, INCREASED VALUES OF FARMS. Average Value Over State of Oregon Is $3,693. The lands of Oregon, accordlnc to recently issued government statistics. are peculiar, in that each part of the state has its own characteristics. In the valleys of the Western -part of this state, notably those of the Wil lamette, umpqua and Rogue Rivers, the soil is rich dark loam. The hills have a heavier soil and the moun tains are suitable only for grazing. In the eastern part, ine soil is sandy in general, and contains much alkali, but is very fertile under Irrigation. In the northeast, extensive areas of naturally fertile wheat lands are found; in the southeast, the cultiva tion of crops is of very little import ance, but the land is extensively used for grazing purposes. The Number of Farms, The total number of larms In Ore gon in 1900 was over 30 times as great as in 1850, and 40.4 per cent greater than in 1890. The total acre age has also increased greatly, being over 33 times as great as in 1850, have undergone territorial changes only Harney and Morrow report de creases since 1890 in the total num ber of farms. Harney nlone shows a decrease in tho total farm area, all others reporting substantial gains. The decreased Improved acreage re ported for a number of counties is due to a more intensive cultivation of smaller areas of farm land and a - strict construction of the term "improved." Tho central counties, which are chiefly devoted to stock raising, contain the largest larms, while the smallest farms are in the western counties, and are devoted to general agriculture, dairying, fruit growing and market garuenlng. The average size of farms for the stato is 281 acres, varying from 80.7 acres in Multnomah county to 1,300.2 acres in Crook county. For the state the average value of farms Is $3,C93. In over two-thirds qC the counties the total vaiuo of farms has increased since 1S90, the do creases reported in tho remaining counties being slight. Marked gains are reported in the value of imple ments nnd machinery, tLe average value per farm in 1900 being $182. AH counties, except Yamhill, report The caln in the last 10 vears wns 5.8 per cent. The average expenditure in the state for labor in 1899 was $135 per farm, but varied greatly in different sections, the average amount expend ed in all eastern counties, except wanowa, being much larger than elsewhere. The total expenditure for fertilizers in 1899 was greater than in 1889, but still averaged less than $1 per farm. The majority of coun ties show increases in the use of commercial fertilizers. Portland Increase in Number. Between 1850 and 1880 the number of farms increased faster than tho total acreage, Involving a decrease In the average size of farms, and lndl catine a nrocressivfi division nf fnrm holdings and a more complete utlllz-1 JournaI- ation of the son.
