There are over 40,000,000 acres of the best government lands In America located In the extremely, fertile rc glons of Minnesota, Nortli Dakota, Montana, Northern Idaho, Washing ton and Oregon, and open for occu pancy by actual aettlers. Citizens of the United States, or persons who havo declared their Intention to be come such, can obtain lands as fol lows: Homesteads. Any person wno is 1110 Heart of a family, or who has 'arrived at the age or 21 years, and is a citizen of the United States or has filed his decla ration of intention to becomo such, and who Is not. tho proprietor of moro than 160 acies of land in any state or territory, is entitled to enter one quarter section (1G0 acres), or leas quantity of unappropriated land, un der the homestead laws. The appli cant must make affidavit, that ho is entitled to the privileges of the home stead act, and that the entry is made for his exclusive use and benefit, and for actual settlement and cultivation, and must pay tho legal fee and that part of the commissioners required as follows: Fee for 1G0 acres, $ld; com mission, ?4 to $12; feo for SO acres, $5; commission, $2 to $6. Within six months from the date of entry, tho settler mut take up his residence thereupon and cultivate tho same for five years continuously. At tho expir ation of this period, or within two years thereafter, proof of residence and cultivation must bo established by four -witnesses. Tho proof of set tlement with the certificate of the Register of the land office is forward ed to tho General Land office at Washington, from which patent -is is sued. Pinal proof can not be made until the expiration of five years from date of entry, and must bo made with in seven years. Tho government rec ognizes no salo of a homestead claim. After expiration of 14 months from date of entry tho law allows the home steader to tecure title to the tract, if so desired by paying for it in cash and making proof or settlement, residence and cultivation for that period. Tho law allows only one homestead prlvl- jege to any one person. Soldiers' Homesteads. A soldier, having served In the army or navy during the war of the rebellion for over P0 days, can obtain 1G0 acres of any of the public lands by filing (himself or by an attorney) a declaratory statement, and. within six months thereafter, filing his nffl davit and application, commencing settlement and cultivation, and con tinning the -same five years, less the time he served in the army or navy but, such time in no case to exceed four years. His widow can take ad vantage of the above. In case of his death in the army, or discharge there from on acount of wounds or disabill ty incurred in the line of duty, the term of enlistment is deducted. In case of death of the soldier, his widow, if unmarried, or in case of her death or marriage, then his mlnoi orphan children, by guardian duly ap pointed and officially accredited at the Department of the Interior, shall be entitled to all the benefits given to soldiers under the homestead laws. An unmarried woman, of age, can take the benefit of tho homestead law. If she marries before she lias acquired title, and continues her resi dence on her claim, she can proceed to prove up at the proper time, the same as if she had remained single, but husband and wife cannot secure separate tracts by maintaining separ ate residence at the same time. All tho sons and daughters of a family, who are of age, are entitled to take up lands under the United States land laws. The Desert Land Act. In some portions of the far West there are considerable areas of arid land which with irrigation become very productive. In many of such lo calities water Is a bundant and con venient, and irrigating ditches are in expensive. It pays to irrigate, as it insures a certain crop every year and an Increased yield. The following act of congress designates how one-half section (320 acres): Qf such can be ob tained: Under Desert Management Citizens of the United States, or persons who have declared their In tention to becomo such, and who are also resident citizens of the state or territory in which the land sought is situated, may file a declaration, under oath, with the Register and Receiver of the land district in which any des ert land Is situated, that he lutends to reclaim a tract of desert land, not exceeding 320 acres, by conducting water upon the same, within four years. At the time oi filing this dec laration, a fee of 25 cents for each aero of land proposed to be so re claimed must be paid. At the time of making the declaration; tho land taken up under this act must be par ticularly described is surveyed, or, if unsurveyed, must be de3cnuei as nearly as possiblo. The party Bhall also file a map of said land, which shall exhibit a plan showing the mode of contemplated Irrigation and which plan shall be sufficient to thoroughly Irrigate and reclaim said land, ana prepare it to raiso ordinary agricul tural crops, and also show the source of tho water to be used for irrigation land reclamation.
