Oregon Lumber Yard Alta St., opp. Court House. Extracts From the Leader's Columns of Local Matter. Miss Grace Knox hns returned from Pendleton, where shci hns boon spending vacation, nnd will enroll nt tho formal Monday. The, Misses Maud and Ethel Swhr Bart, of the class of '02, have been spending the summer on tho ranch, near Heppner. Mr, Swaggart Is erecting a residence nt Pendleton, whero they expect to make ihelr homo In tho future William IClng, who has endured much suffering from blood poisoning In the hand, submitted to a second operation recently nt walla Walla, one finger being entirely removed. He now hopes to be nblo to return to Weston within a fow days. Tho entire trouble results from a splin ter which entered his finger. Guy Thompson had his loft leg badly twisted Monday while driving to the Tamarack Mill Company's sawmill on Weston Mountain. The leg was dangling from the running gears and encountered a stump, and as usual, flesh and blood were worst ed in the collision. Despite the pain, the young man was able to drive back to town, and is now recovering. Two acres of American Banner oats yielded 70 bushels per aero at Fairview farm. The seed was obtain ed from Portland for It. F. Johnson by Chris Thoeny, and seems to find mountain soil congenial, Next year Mr. Johnson will devote a large part of his farm to its growth, as ho con siders oats a profitable mountain crop. His wheat this year averaged 35. bushels per acre. Tho monster tooth of some prehis toric animal was discovered in tho banks of Wild Horse Creek the other day by Mrs. Edwin Simpson, while engaged in the prosaic occupation or hunting eggs near her home. It was brought to town and has been pro nounced the tooth of a dlnosausus by the professor of science at the Normal. Klder Simpson thinks of digging and delving out there to see if he cannot unearth a bone mine, and relinquish farming.
