NEW OREGON MINERAL.
Discoveries Made Near Sumpter That
May Prove. Valuable.
Baker City, Sept. 12. A new dis
covery of molybdenite, a rare metal.
Is reported In the Buckhorn quartz
claim, which is situated on the head
waters of Deer Creek, about five
miles from Sumpter, according to the
Sumpter Reporter. The production
of molybdenite in the United States
in 1900 has probatily not been over
15. tons, which does not supply the
demand. The ore must be free from
copper to make it marketable. The
assays made of the molybdenite
taken out of the above claim runs
from $400 to $800 per ton and if the
mineral is found 95 per cent pure it
is worth $3000 per ton.
The chief uses of Molybdenum un
til recently have been In determin
ing phosphoric acid by ammonium
molybate, and preparing blue car
mine for coloring porcelelu. The
Ferro-A'lloy of molybdenum is now
used in making a special steel to
which it gives valuable properties.
There are two claims In the group.

National Athletic Championships.
New York, Sept. 13. The eyes of
all devotees of athletics are turned
today toward Travers Island, where
the annual national championships
are being pulled off under the auspi

The entry list this year is largo and
of an exceptionally higli class and
there promises to be a smashing of
records In a number of events. Geo.

view of the rapid opening of the eroii
there is a general shortage of labor will be seen in the distance rtlnfl,
and the problem pormlses to be a sCr-' sprints and one mlio championships

me largest growers of cotton declare
that they have never seen a. time
when there was such a scarcity' as
there is at present.
The indications are that the picking
season win ue snort this year. The
fact that the entire crop Is so much
earner than usual and that the
weather has been so hot Is accepted
as sure signs of this. Some of the
crop authorities are predicting that
the entire crop win be gathered be
fore the Christmas holidays and that
the bulk of it will have been harvested
by the end of November, if not con
siderably earlier. This fact of Itself
tends to complicate the labor Ques
tion still more, and should there come
lnd weather, the result would he very
damaging because of the largo
amount of cotton that would be
caught In the field.

Duffy is scheduled for the arena of a

In the minds of those acquainted with
the 'attitude of the city authorities
in regard to prize fights. it was
Gans' fake fight with Terry McGovem

In all fights being prohibited for a
longtime. Since that time Gans has
been under the bap so far as the Chi
cago authorities are concerned and
unless the powers that be have been
induced to forget the incident It is not
likely that the colored flglter from
Baltimore will be seen in the squared
circle here tonight.
