Joseph Hughes, of Klickatat county arrived yesterday at the penltentinry to serve 20 years for murder in the second degree. One thousand and sixty-five wheel men have taken out bicycle licenses since July 1. The local wheat market has been stronger the past few days and 55 cents has been offered for high grade grain. The sacrament of Baptism will be administered at 11 a. m. WALLA WALLA ITEMS. Men Who Assaulted Chinamen Fined $57 Each Strong Local Wheat Market. Walla Walla, Sept. 13. Charged with assaulting and beating a China man, O. Doak, James Doyle and Rob ert Glenn yesterday appeared in court in this city, having been brought from Wallula by Deputy Sheriff Painter. The three men were charged with having beaten the Ce lestial and then removing from his pockets $3.55, all the change he had. The Chinaman appeared in court with a badly disfigured face, and the men were readily found guilty of as sault and battery. It was impossible to show the robbery and that part of the case was dropped. Judge Glass ford fined the men 57.50 each, and the amount was promptly paid. The men came from Wallula, where they are quite well known. Wallula has been infested for several months with a band of roustabouts who cause more or less trouble all the time. Walla Walla, Sept. 13 For the first time in many years, Walla Walla was yesterday cut off from all com munication with Portland, the cause being a wrecked train along the Co lumbia River near The Dalles. Another Hold-up in Wallula This Time a Chinamen is the Victim. Walla Walla, SepL 13. Oad Doak, Bob Glenn and James Doyle, of Wal lula, were brought to this city yester day by Deputy Sheriff Charles Pain ter and locked in the county jail on a charge of highway robbery, The alleged victim is a Chinaman who claims the men robbed him of $3.50. The supposed crlmo was committed In Wallula Wednesday night. The three men were drinking in. the saloon when it is alleged they called upon the Celestial to "buy." He re fused and the men assaulted him. Aside from a severo mauling the Chinaman alleges the trio robbed him of $3.50. He attempted to have a warrant issued for the arrest of Doak, Glenn and Doyle and it is said Justice of the Peace J. V. Lewis refused to issue the papers. Then the Celestial came to Walla Walla and secured the necessary papers from Justice Wil liam Glasford. Deputy Sheriff Charles Painter tel ephoned to have the men held until he arrived on tho afternoon train. The prlsonersaccompanied Mr. Pain ter to Walla Walla and declare they can easily prove their innocence of the crime of robbery. On Monday tho fall term of the Walts burg Academy will open, and present prospects are for a largely increased enrollment over that ot last year. Monday and Tuesday will be given up to enrollment and classification, and Wednesday morning the first chapel exercises will be held. After that time the work will be regular. A new girls' dormitory is just com pleted and today was thrown open for occupancy. The building was donat- 1 ed by Miss Ina Law Robertson, a ! friend in the East. Much in terest is manifested in military cir cles in tho contest for the Palma tro phy, which Is being shot off today on the new Dominion rifle ranges.
