Domesticated Tendency of
Born in Captivity.
Speaking of the wild animals In n
recent menagerie, tho Helena Inde
pendent says:
"A dozen babies have been born
since the show left winter quarters
in uaraboo, Wisconsin, last Anril
The little ones are always a source
of keen enjoyment to lovers of anl
mals, and their cages draw Immense
crowds during tho hours tho menag
erie is open to the public.
In one cage are two magnificent
female lions, and each is the mother
of two fuzzy little cubs. The young'
sters are just a month old and are as
playful as kittens. They are always
reaay to receive a caress, but as
their mothers make strenuous objec
tions to any overtures in this line
from strangers, two attendants are
kept continually at tho cage to keep
the crowd from approaching too near
the bars.
"One wee baby leopard, the last of
a litter of three, Is quite an attrac
tlon. He is spotted just like his
mother and devotes his Bpnre time
to catching files. He Is becoming
quite an adept In the art, If It may be
called that, and has made tho snakes
who occupy an adjoining case, decid
edly jealous.
"Mrs Melbourne, tho Australian
kangaroo Is very proud of a bright
eyed bit of a baby, who has thus far
refused to leave the peculiar pouch
which nature has applied to the kan
garoo for the purpose of carrying
their young. The little one is called
Denver, because she was born In the
well known city of that name in Col-1
urdo.
"A baby seal with black and white
spots is another attraction. She is
called Princess, but is entirely toe
young to remember her roya.' ianle'
"A deer of tho Husslan whifn ."0'
cieo, a gazelle, and a tiger cub com
prise the big animal family of little
tots."
