Farmers and Union Laborers Unite at
Walla Walla In a Great Holiday.
Walla Walla. Wash.. Sept. 1.
"Straw day" a new holiday, and La
bor day, a fitting recognition to organ
ized labor In this country, aro being
Jointly celebrated here today, for the
first time in the history of the city.
Never before has organized labor
beon .strong enough to claim recognl
tioni and but once before have the
farmers made any pretentions of no
ticing the day when the roads are to
bo treated with straw, and that was
rather informal. Today all parts of
the county are represented and hun
dreds of people from city ana coun
try are Joining hands In a common
jollification.
At 10 o'clock most of tho business
houses closed and tho banks and pub
lic 'offices did not open at all. At 1
o'clock the labor unions formed a
parade at Main and First, while at
tho court house gathered scores of
farmers with teams hitched to loads
of straw, the wagons also carrying
large loads of people who wanted to
be In the unique parade. The labor
unions formed with the Walla Walla
band in the lead and after marching
a few blocks picked up the straw vet
erans and their friends, thence pass
ing through Main street and to the
grounds. The parade was the most
unique in the history of Walla Walla.
At the grounds this afternoon a pro
gram of speeches and music, with a
splendid barbecue dinner, entertain
ed the people, and tonight the labor
union will give a dance at the hall
corner of Main and First streets.
The feature of the day's enjoyment
will be the final awarding of prizes
to parties who have scattered straw,
but the task will be a hard one, and
may not be completed until tomor
row. Prizes ranging in value from a
dollar to perhaps $25 or $50.
Forger Arrested.
Walla Walla, Wash., Sept. l.Depu
ty Sheriff Painter arrived today from
Pocatello, Idaho, whore he went a
few days ago in Bearch of A. Hoeber,
wanted In this city for obtaining
money under false pretenses. Mr.
Painter found his man, arrested him
and landed him in the county Jail to
await trial here. He is also wanted
by the Idaho officials, but they will
have a second chance at him.
A few weeks ago Hoeber appeared
in this city and representing himself
as tho agent of the Continental To
bacco Co., contracted several debts.
He issued checks against the com
pany which in most cases were al
ways, .dishonored. A complaint was
made, a warrant issued and Dep
uty Painter started in pursuit a few
days ago. Hoeber Is a very smooth
man, and the outcome of his case here
win be watched with Interest.
A Bad Accident.
Amallo Schuler, the 10-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tost Schu
ler, met with a serious accident Sat
urday afternoon. The Schuler family
live over the Crane saloon and
dumb waiter is UBed to pass meals to
the men working down in the bar
room. Tho little girl was sending
dinner down to the bartender when
Bhe lost her balance and fell through
the shaft to the floor below, a dis
tan co of 20 feet. One bone of the
spine was fractured, and the skull
crushed. She is still alive and strong
hopes are -entertained for her recovery.
A Local Poet
Pendleton now has a citizen-poet
of considerable prominence in the per
son of Miss Agnes Dunbar. She has
written a large collection of poems
and many of them are pronounced
gems or literature. Bast Oregonlan
publishes a poem by the young lady
today. Miss Dunbar Is also an elo
cutionist of note. She is a graduate
from Cooper's School of Acting and
Elocution, of San Francisco, and has
taught elocution in the cities and
towns of the Pacific coast. She will
open a school of elocution in the East
Oregonlan building tomorrow.
