Had Started Fire In Lumber Pile and Was Almost Caught In Act J. H. Young Put the Fire Out An Incendiary attomted another fire Tuesday night and was almost caught in the act. He started fire in the neighborhood where the others originated. That, there is a flro bug operating in Pendleton has been proven beyond a doubt The Inst three serious Arcs have been of mysterious origin and there was a feeling that a Are fiend was getting in his work. Whether or not all three of these fires were set by some one will probably never be known, but It Is known that nnother attempt was made to destroy prop erty, and only for the timely appear ance of J. H. Young, the lumber in the O. It & N. yard would have been reduced to ashes and perhaps other property in that vicinity. Just aner dusk Tuesday evening Mr. Young was going home and dis covered smoke arising from the cast end of some of the piles of lumber He hastened to the scene and found a pile of shavings which had un doubtedly been placed there by some one with the intent of destroying property. The shavings had been placed on the end of some lumbc and fired. Most of them were burned up when Mr. Young arrived, but evi dences to prove that they had been placed there, and fired, still remained and Mr, Young is confident that the flro was not started from smoulder ing remains of the fire which destroy ed so much nronertv last SaturdaV It was quite a distance from the scene of the old fire. Several hundred thousand feet of lumber was in the yard and other property would have been Jeopardized had the fire fiend accomplished his purpose. The lumber being slightly green saved it from Igniting quickly and perhaps saved a serious fire. The affair has been kept quiet by the police in the hopes of catching the miscreant and punishing mm as his dastardly purpose demands. A man was' seen sneaking along in the shade of freight cars a short distance from the fire Just before it was discovered Every effort will be made to locate and punish the guilty. Goodman, who is in town from the famous Hudson's Bay stock rarm, says the farmers and stockmen of the Bay country are much elated over the prospects of having a free mail delivery. The route has been laid out from Freewater, a distance of 32 miles into the Hudson's Bay country, and the farmers will get their mail every day. In this way the farmers will be able to get the news of the world brought to them as it occurs. They can take a daily pa per and not have to wait until they go to town to read of what is hap pening. In most instances the farm er is too busy to get to town more than once a week and those living very far away are not able to get their mail even this often without great inconvenience.
