Sneak Thieves Now Working at La Grande. Landlord Fisher of the Hotel Foley received a message today from S. P, Hammill, a commercial traveller, to spare no pains in the recovery of a small telescope, containing pictures etc., which was stolen from the late west bound train at La Grande. Mr. Hammill left on the train for Pendle ton and it is supposed that his grip was swiped from the train at this point. Only a few nights ago a valise was stolen from the train here, and it appears that there is some one who is making a regular business of this kind of work. It is an easy matter when the train is late to enter a coach and pick almost anything that is in sight. The conditions are such that stealing is easy and. recovery is a hard proposition. The police were notified but they have not found, any trace of it or the thief. "The contents of the grip," said Mr. Hamiil, "is worth nothing to any one but me and to mo It is worth $200 or $300, as it will be some time before I can get it replaced, and in the meantime I cannot do any work with half the success I would if I had my paraphernalia."
