CYCLISTS KICK.
STEALING FROM TRAINS.
Sneak Thieves Now Working at La
Grande.
Landlord Fisher of the Hotel Foley
received a message today from S. P,
Hammill, a commercial traveller, to
spare no pains in the recovery of a
small telescope, containing pictures
etc., which was stolen from the late
west bound train at La Grande. Mr.
Hammill left on the train for Pendle
ton and it is supposed that his grip
was swiped from the train at this
point. Only a few nights ago a valise
was stolen from the train here, and
it appears that there is some one who
is making a regular business of this
kind of work. It is an easy matter
when the train is late to enter a coach
and pick almost anything that is in
sight. The conditions are such that
stealing is easy and. recovery is a
hard proposition. La Grande Chroni

Declare That People Scatter Tacks
on the Sidewalks and Spoil Tires.
Bicyclists are kicking because of
the playful habit of certain people In
this city of scattering quantities of
carpet tacks upon the sidewalks,
greatly to the detriment of the rub
ber tires of bicycles ridden over the
tack Infested portions of tho Bide-
walks.
There are several places in this
city, according to the statement of a
cyclist who has been up against
them, where the venturesome cyclist
who rides upon the sidewalk can be
morally certain that his tire will be
punctured before he has ridden half
a block.
According to the city ordinances
any cyclist who pays a license can
ride upon the walks of all but the
two main business streets and the
people who take out such a license
are kicking on account of having to
run the risks of losing their tires
after paying the ?3 required for walk
riding privileges.
LOST HIS GRIP.
Drummer Victim of Sneak Thieves
on Passenger Train.
S. B. Hamiil is at Hotel Pendleton
mourning the loss of his grip which
contained nothing of value to any
one but himself. He is traveling for
Burley & Tyrrell, of Chicago, and his
lost grip contained his catalouges,
price lists, photographs and other
stuff pertaining to the introducing of
his business.
When Mr. Hamiil boarded the train
at La Grande yesterday morning, the
car was crowded and he had three
grips. He went through the car look
ing for a seat. He sat one of his
grips down to look through the car,
and when he turned round the grin
was gone. Every effort was made to
find what had become of it, but to
no avail. The police were notified
but they have not found, any trace of
it or the thief.
"The contents of the grip," said
Mr. Hamiil, "is worth nothing to any
one but me and to mo It is worth
$200 or $300, as it will be some time
before I can get it replaced, and in
the meantime I cannot do any work
with half the success I would if I had
my paraphernalia."
