Does Well In West Turkey-red wheat, tho kind that mado Kansas famous, has been Intro duced into the Walla Walla valley, says the Union, and It Is hoped by those who were instrumental in bringing it hero that next season will witness a largo number of fields pro ducing it. It is a variety that la strongly productive on tho lighter land and 90 acres on the farm of Fred Coyle yielded 40 bushels to tho acre this year. It is essentially a winter wheat and must ho planted in the fall. Dement Brothers' Company was instrumental in securing the trial of grain here. Turkey-red wheat will give a better yield to the acre on tho lighter lands than does the bluestem of tho Walla Walla valley. It is a grain that re quires less moisture than bluestem, and for that reason is better adapted to the land upon which it Is advocat ed to be planted. On tho soil of less er density In this county it will pro duce 40 bushels where bluestem would only bring 30. That is tho claim of those who have tried it and who claim they know whereof they speak. While Turkey-red is a new wheat in the Walla Walla valley it is by no means an experiment. It has been grown in different parts of the United States for a number of years and al ways with excellent resultB when I properly seeded and planted on ground suitable to its nedp. It would not yield, well on tJi? lioftYlP1" loam land of tho foothills, but on tho Eure ka flat and lower Touchet farms it Is claimed to work far better than either club or bluestem. Turkey-red must bo seeded in tho fall and permitted to rest in tho soil throughout tho winter, otherwise It will not head. It cannot bo sown in the spring and bring forth a crop. The stalks will fail to head and die down, to spring up again the next year and produce bountifully. This has been learned from experiments. Those who have tried the new grain in this section express themselves as highly pleased with the results shown. La Grande Obi server. Republicans of New Mexico. Albuquerquo, N. M.. Auir. 22. In compliance with tho call of chairman Prank A. Hubbell, tho members of tho republican territorial central committee gathered hero today to confer regarding tho date and place ror holding tho territorial convention. Opinions expressed by sovoral of the committeemen indicate a sentiment in favor of holdliiK the convention In Ilaton, probably the first week Ju October.
