Walla Walla, 14; La Grande, 12 Immediately upon hearing of the Indians' defeat at Baker City last Thursday, Manager Cohen sent their "ginger" cans over by express and the result was that in Friday's game the boys from the reservation borders took a line of scalps off tho Gold Dig' gers which made the score board read S to 0 when the game was ended. Salisbury Was In the box for Pen clleton and pitched a nice game, which, with Adams' flue work behind the hat and good support in the field made the Diggers easy propositions for the Redskins. Joe Mahaffey, who pitched the best game of the series here, against the Indians! was hit treely on Friday and is now a firm believer in the old saying that Friday is unlucky. Both sides played good ball and the Baker boys only landed their nine goose eggs after a fierce strug gle which gave the crowd tho full face value of their money. Score by innings. When tho team returned to tho hotel, there Dickoy was sitting and this was his explanation: "Well, I'll mako as many errors as anybody, and I'll stand tho gaff from tho boss, but when I let three easy ones roll through my fists and then see the girl get up niyl leave tho grand stand, then I quit. Did I mako the run? I used to bc a 10-second num. and I bet that fenco never saw me first." And the story has gono the rounds. Counterfeit Five Dollar Bills. Story of How "Dickey" Put Himself Out of a Game at Butte. There is a good story going the rounds about Dickey Knox, recently with the Indians, but now with the Butte, team, this one being told by the Miner. It seems that Dickey was playing second some years ago, and his work was particularly bad. finally Dickey made a particularly miserable error, and that was tho last straw. He gave up. And this is the conversation one of the boys playing In the infield heard him address to himself: "Dickey Knox, you're rotten." "Dickey, you ought to be shoveling coal." "Dickey Knox, you are the worst that ever wore a mitt, and if you don't do better you'll have to leave the game. "Dickey, I am not only surprised, but I am grieved at tho manner In which you handle yourself today." Just then Dickey had another chance and he missed it. And that was tho last of Dickoy. The players thought ho was chasing after the ball when they saw him making for cen ter field, but he wasn't. The center fielder got the ball before Dickey got to It, but that did not delay Dickey. He kept right on. The boys stood looking at him in amazement. Ho showed no sign of stopping, and his feet loooked like twinkling stars as the sunlight struck his heel plates. Whore was Dickey going and what BARGAINS J Commencing Wednes day, Aug. 20, we will sell & at actual cost 300 Boxes Fancy Stationery All shapes, sizes and .col- ors from 5c to 75c per box.
