changed in the gold fields in the last
10 years.
.Mrs. Sam Thompson and little
daughter, Misses Nellie, Mable and
Josie Cameron, returned last evening
from a very pleasant stay at Hidaway
Springs. While at the springs the
little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Thompson was quite sick from eating
poisoned canned corn. Its life was
despaired of for several hours, and
it was seriously sick several days.

and a posse was also organized at
Walla Walla which hastened to the
scene. Taylor was accompanied by
Boone Watson and D. Turner, both
good men with guns, and men whom
he could trust. Arriving at the scene
of the fight, they took the supposed
trail of the outlaws. Saturday night
and all day Sunday the chase was
kept up with vigilance, but no sign of
the robbers was found although the
officers thought they were on the
right trail.
A New Crime.
Sunday evening Sheriff Taylor and
nis posse went to Touchet station,
and stopping at a farm house near
by, were preparing for dinner when
a man was heard hallowing at the
station, a quarter of a mile away.
Nothing was thought of the occur
rence until a man came running over
to the house- where the officers were
and told them a Swede had been held
up and almost beaten to death by two
mugs..
Running Fight.
The officers saddled their horses
and Btarted in pursuit of the two
men, uimiung mey were tne same
fellows wanted for the robbery of the
saloon at Freewater. They followed
them about a mile and a half when
the robbers were discovered in the
brush along the railroad track and a
lively fusilade of shots was engaged
in between the officers and robbers.
The robbers dashed into the under
brush along the creek and, it being
dark by this time It was impossible
to track them further.
Easy Arrests.
The chase was then given up until
Monday morning, whon it was again
taken up, but no further trace could
be found of them until Tuesday fore
noon, wnen one of the men was found
in a wheat field near Athena, where
ho had engaged to work in harvest
He submitted to arrest without re
sistance. The officers then Instituted
a search for the .other outlaw and
soon located hira working In another
harvest field. He also submitted to
arrest without trouble and the two
were turned over to the Walla Walla
sheriff, the crime of robbing the
Swede having been committed in the
mate of Washington.
Had Not Caught Right Men.
