GOOD ROADS MOVEMENT.
"Straw Day" in Walla Walla County
Set for Labor Day Elaborate Prep
aratlons.
To tho Promoter of tho Good Roads
Movement:
The people of Walla Walla county
are convinced that their commercial
social and moral well-being will bo
greatly promoted by the acquisition
of permanent good roads. Acting
upon this conviction, a committee of
citizens in conjuctlon with tho board
of county commissioners havo per
fected an organization for tho duo ob
servance of the second annual "Straw
Day" in Walla Walla county.
The plan adopted for this occasion
is briefly as follows
Monday, September 1, 19Q2, being
Labor day, has been chosen as ' Straw
day."
Every road supervisor in tho coun
ty is chief of tho Btrawing force In
his district, and has the right to
name three "strawing captains" as
his assistants to co-operate with him
in strawing the roads In his district.
It is expected that tho public spir
ited farmers will donate tho straw
and teams to put tho straw on the
roads, so that no expense will bo In
curred for this purpose by tho couu
ty or committee.
All the districts in this county will
be strawed on tho forenoon of Straw
day; but districts aro allowed tho
right to select any day they may
choose for strawing, and will receive
credit for such strawing whoa re
ports of work done aro turned in to
tho committee on Straw day. It is
expected that at least 300 miles of
1 the roads of Walla Walla county will
be strawed as the result of this or
ganized movement.
On the afternoon of Straw day a
public celebration and old-fashioned
barbecue will bo held at Baumolstor's
grove, near Walla Walla city, at
which time two oxen will bo barbe
cued, mutton and other meats roast
ed, and the multitudes fed. A liter
ary program will bo provided, with
ablo speakers to treat subjects gor
inane to the movement, and the Wal
la Walla Military band will furnish
the music. All organized labor so
cieties aro invited to participate, and
will be presented on this program,
and in tho day's festivities.
The Walla Walla committee
earnestly recommends to all countleB
In Washington and Oregon, Interested
In good roads, to set on foot the
movement to better tho roads of thlor
respective counties, and hold a cele
bration in commemoration thereof.
The committee also invites all who
can be present to attend at Walla
Walla on Straw day, and contribute
to tho success of that day,
A largo numbor of prizes have been
donated by our enterprising mer
chants and citizens, and will bo
awarded in tho competition for work
dono on the public roads,
Tho commltteo requests all news
papers receiving this circular to pub
lish the same for tho information of
their people and readers.
