EXPORT FIGURES.
A Few Figures as to What United
Sates Is Doing In This Line.
Treasury bureau of statistics fig
ures show that in the fiscal yepr 1901
the non-contiguouB territory of the
United States took exports from this
country" to the value of $50,000,000,
Hawaii leading off with purchases to
the value of $20,000,000, Alaskn fol
lowing with $15,000,000, Porto Rico
Hrj
$10,000,000 and the Philippines $5,000
0"ii
As illustrating the effects of annex
at ion a comparison of renorta with
1897 shows that shipments flvo years
ago were: To Hawaii, $4,690,075;
Porto Rico, $1,988,888; the Philip
pines, $94,647, while Alaskan exports
have likewise expanded from $4,690,
075, indicating an aggregate growth
of about 600 per cenL Imports for the
same period have Increased from $2,
181,024 to $8,000,000 for Porto Rico;
from $13,687,799 to $23,000,000 for Ha
waii; from $5,000,000 to $15,000,000
from Alaska, and from $4,383,740 to
$7,000,000 for the Philippines.
These remarkable gains muicaie
that none of our outside Investments
are poor paying properties from :i
commercial standpoint, but of even
greater significance is the fact that of
this increase of some $65,000,000 in
trade during a half decade over $50,-
000,000 is to'be credited to the Pacific
coast West Coast Trade.
SHIFTING SAND DUNES.
Problem of Protecting Property From
Their Encroachments.
The protection of valuable proper
ty from te encroachment oi sinning
sand dunes is becoming an important
problem in some portions of the coun
try. The regions most severely af
fected are the Atlantic and Pacific
coasts, the lake district of Michigan
and the Columbia River district or
Washingto nand Oregon.
Two field parties from the bureau
nf fnrfatrv nre at work on this prob
lem. One will Investigate the worst
dune districts along the Atlantic coast
and will study carefully the grasses,
shrubs and trees that can be used
either for temuorarv or permanent vo
tpntlnn of the sand dunes, and will
also inquire into other methods of
holding the active dunes, or changing
their direction. Very successiui worn
in holdlnc tho sand by grass and
shrub planting has already been done
by the State of MassaciiusettB on a
portion of Cape Cod known as tho
"Province Lands."
The problem along the Columbia
River is somewhat different from
that alone the Atlantic Coast, owing
to the different origin and character
of the sand. It Is expected, however,
that the control of the sand there,
like that of the coast sand, can be
effected by means of grass or shrub
planting, and afterwards by foresta
tion. Primarily, the object of control-
lug the Band Is to protect vaiuamo
property which is endangered by the
dunes. The bureau lias undertaken
this work In order to give practical
assistance to persons who have re
quested its aid in the protection of
their property.
BET r-rtlD IN NOVEL WAY.
Band Played While Loser Rolled Pea
nut a Mile With a Crowbar,
James Coyle, according to a Phil
adelphia dispatch to tho New York
World, paid his wager on tho Jeffries
Fltzslmmons fight m a novel manner.
Several hundred men and a brass
band aided him in discharging his
obligations. Coyio bet William H.
Smith that Fitzsimmons would win.
The loser was to roll a peanut with
a crowbar from Ponn street and Pul
aski avenue to Washington lane and
Gennantown avenue, one mile.
After staying up all night to learn
how the fight resulted, Coyio, equip
ped wJth crowbar and peanut, assem
bled himself at tho starting point. The
crowbar weighed forty pounds, the
peanut one-fortieth of an ounce. Coyle
wore a hat of straw.
The band played a funeral yiarch as
Coyle urged the i.eanut over the pave
ment with the point of tho crowbar,
Every few feet the peanut would roll
into a crevice, and delicate manipula
tion with the crowbar was required
to extricate it.
Tho distance was covered In two
hours and a half.
